What is Vfend?

Vfend is the drug voriconazole, an antifungal of the triazole class that works by stopping the growth of infection-causing fungi. It is prescribed to treat a variety of fungal and yeast infections.

How do I take Vfend?

Vfend is administered as a tablet that is taken orally twice a day with water on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or after a meal. The strength and frequency will be determined by your physician; follow the dosing instructions exactly and continue to take this medication even if you feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Vfend?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Vfend, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next one, skip it and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Vfend?

If an overdose of Vfend is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose may include closed eyes, depression, dilated pupils, drooling, extreme tiredness, light sensitivity, problems with balance, seizures, shortness of breath, and a swollen stomach.

Before taking Vfend, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to voriconazole, other antifungals, or any of the ingredients in the Vfend drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have, or have had, low calcium, magnesium, or potassium levels

  • You have bradycardia, tachycardia, or arrhythmia; prolonged QT interval; or cardiomyopathy

  • You have blood cell cancer

  • You have liver or kidney disease

  • You have diabetes

  • You have any conditions that interferes with digesting lactose or sucrose

What are the possible side effects of taking Vfend?

Vision problems, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, flushing, headache, nausea, and vomiting are all possible side effects of Vfend. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for Vfend patient assistance. See a doctor right away if you have any severe side effects, including chest pain or tightness, chills, tremors, confusion, extreme tiredness, rapid breathing, tachycardia or arrhythmia, flu-like symptoms, aural and visual hallucinations, lack of energy, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, unusual bruising or bleeding, upset stomach, or symptoms of jaundice such as yellowing of the skin or eyes.

How do I store Vfend?

Keep Vfend tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Vfend may affect your vision or balance, or make you drowsy or dizzy, so avoid driving until the drug’s effects are known. Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
