About Diflucan

What is Diflucan?

Diflucan is a medication that is used to treat and prevent multiple kinds of fungal and yeast infections. Diflucan is part of a family of medications called azole antifungals that work by discontinuing the growth of various types of fungi. Diflucan uses include the treatment or prevention of yeast infections of the vagina, throat, esophagus, abdomen, mouth, blood, lungs, and many other organs. It is also used to treat meningitis brought on by fungus. Those who are prone to yeast infections that are undergoing chemotherapy before a bone marrow transplant may take Diflucan.

How do I take Diflucan?

Diflucan comes in the form of a tablet or a liquid suspension. Both should be taken orally. Typically, Diflucan pills are taken once daily. The liquid medication should be shaken well before each use. Depending on your doctor’s instructions, you may take the medication only one time or for several weeks. The dosage instructions will vary based on your condition. Never take less or more of your prescription. Do not discontinue Diflucan without your doctor’s approval. Even if you feel the infection has resolved, discontinue Diflucan too soon may cause the infection to return.

What if I forget to take a dose of Diflucan?

If a dose of Diflucan is missed, administer it as soon as you recall. If it is just about time for the next dose, do not double up on doses, skip your missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Diflucan?

If an overdose or an allergic reaction is suspected, contact your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222, call 911, or go to an emergency room immediately. Severe symptoms of a Diflucan overdose include hallucinations or extreme paranoia.
