About Noxafil

What is Noxafil?

Noxafil contains an antifungal drug called posaconazole, which is more powerful that itraconazole and fluconazole. It prevents infection from invasive candida and aspergillus fungi in patients with compromised immune systems. It may also be used to treat candida infections of the mouth and throat in patients for whom other antifungal drugs have not been successful. Noxafil works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is found in the membranes of fungal cells. This stops the growth of the fungus and clears or prevents the infection.

How do I take Noxafil?

Take Noxafil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken three times daily, but this will vary based on your condition and the type of the infection. The bottle of oral solution should be shaken well before you measure it in the dosing cup. Noxafil works best when it is taken within 20 minutes after eating a meal. Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea and vomiting that won’t stop. This can also decrease the efficacy of this medication. If you have any questions about how to take Noxafil, contact your pharmacist for patient assistance.

What if I forget to take a dose of Noxafil?

Try to remember to take all of your doses of Noxafil. If you miss a dose, take it whenever you remember, but try not to take it on an empty stomach. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Do not take double doses to compensate for missed ones.

What happens if I overdose on Noxafil?

Signs of overdose on Noxafil may be similar to side effects. Noxafil overdose has been fatal. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Noxafil, seek medication attention as soon as possible.

Before taking Noxafil, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to antifungal drugs or any of the ingredients in Noxafil

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • You have trouble eating a complete meal or taking a meal replacement that has been recommended by your doctor

  • You have an irregular heartbeat

  • You’ve ever had jaundice or kidney or liver disease

  • You are experiencing severe diarrhea or vomiting

  • You have low levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium

What are the possible side effects of taking Noxafil?

Some less serious side effects from taking Noxafil include mild headaches, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation, mild muscle pain, trouble sleeping and feeling tired. Talk to your doctor if these side effects are severe or don’t go away. Some side effects should be reported immediately. These include fast or pounding heartbeat, feeling faint or passing out, chest pain, severe headache, jaundice, high blood pressure, anxiety, blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, new signs of infection, confusion, extreme thirst, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and clay-colored stools.

How do I store Noxafil?

Both Noxafil tablets and the oral solution can be stored at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Store Noxafil in its child-resistant container.

Warnings

Always take the entire course of medication prescribed to treat or prevent fungal infections. Not completing the course of treatment can cause fungi to become resistant to the drug.
