About Tri-Lo-Sprintec

What is Tri-Lo Sprintec?

Tri-Lo Sprintec contains two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norgestimate (a progestin). These hormones prevent ovulation (the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle) and cause vaginal fluid to become thicker, which helps prevent pregnancy. This hormonal drug may offer additional health benefits, such as making periods more regular, decreasing the risk of developing ovarian cysts, and clearing up acne.

How do I take Tri-Lo Sprintec?

If this is your first time using a hormonal birth control drug, take the first pill in the Tri-Lo Sprintec pack the first Sunday after your period begins (or on the first day of your period, if it falls on a Sunday). Continue taking one pill per day, at the same time every day and in the order they appear in the pack. The first 21 pills contain hormones, while the last 7 pills are hormone-free ‘reminder’ pills. Once your body adjusts to the medication, you should regularly get your period during the week you are taking the reminder pills. Start a new packet of Tri-Lo Sprintec pills as soon as you finish one; make sure to refill your prescription before you run out.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tri-Lo Sprintec?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember (even if that means taking two pills in one day), and then resume your normal dosing schedule. If you miss two hormone-containing pills in a row, take two pills for two days to catch up, and then resume your normal dosing schedule. Use a back-up form of birth control (such as condoms) for at least a week after missing two or more pills. If you regularly forget to take Tri-Lo Sprintec, talk to your doctor about alternative forms of birth control. If you miss any of the ‘reminder’ pills, simply throw them out—since they don’t contain hormones, forgetting them should not be an issue.

What happens if I overdose on Tri-Lo Sprintec?

Overdosing on Tri-Lo Sprintec may cause adverse effects, such as sudden vaginal bleeding or severe nausea and vomiting. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you think that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug.

Before taking Tri-Lo Sprintec, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

  • You have a history of blood clots or a blood clotting disorder

  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer or have had an abnormal mammogram

  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides

  • You have diabetes

  • You have any heart problems

  • You have gallbladder problems

  • You have a history of depression

  • You have kidney or liver disease

  • You have had a stroke

  • You have thyroid problems

  • You have gotten jaundice while pregnant or using hormonal birth control

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • You are breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Tri-Lo Sprintec?

Birth control drugs like Tri-Lo Sprintec may cause certain side effects, such as bloating, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, or light vaginal bleeding in between periods. These side effects usually go away as your body adjusts to the level of hormones. If you have any side effects that last a long time or become bothersome, or if you miss two periods in a row after you start using this medication, contact your doctor. Call your doctor right away if you notice any breast lumps, dark urine, jaundice, or unusual mood changes. Get emergency medical attention if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke.

How do I store Tri-Lo Sprintec?

Store Tri-Lo Sprintec in a dry space at room temperature, out of reach of children and pets. Do not remove pills from the blister package until you’re ready to take them. If you have switched to another form of birth control and have leftover pills, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them.

Warnings

Although the risk is low, Tri-Lo Sprintec can increase your chance of developing blood clots. If you have other risk factors for blood clots (e.g. smoking, being over 35) talk to your doctor to determine if you can safely take this medication. Tri-Lo Sprintec sometimes makes it more difficult to wear contact lenses. If you have trouble keeping your contacts in, contact your optometrist. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you go outside, since Tri-Lo Sprintec can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Brand Names

Tri-Lo Sprintec is a branded generic. It is the bioequivalent of brand name Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, and of the branded generics Tri-Lo Marzi, Tri-Lo Estarylla, and Trinessa Lo. There are many similar birth control medications, including Delyla, Desogen, and Ortho-Cept.
