About Jolessa

What is Jolessa?

Jolessa is a type of extended cycle birth control that lasts for 91 days. Like most birth controls, it contains a form of estrogen and a form of progestin. Jolessa has .15mg of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and .03mg of levonorgestrel (progestin). It works to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucous and stopping ovulation.

How do I take Jolessa?

In order for it to be effective, one Jolessa pill must be taken per day at the same time every day. Pick a time when it is easier for you to remember to take your pill. If you were not previously taking another birth control pill, you may have to use contraception for 7 seven days to wait for the pill to take effect. Talk to your doctor about how long you should wait. You will take the 84 active pills in the pack first. After day 84, you will take one inactive pill per day for 7 days and you will start your period.

What if I forget to take a dose of Jolessa?

If you miss one Jolessa pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember it, and then take your next pill at the regular time. This means you may take two pills in one day. If you miss two pills, take two pills on the day you remember and two the following day to catch up. You must use back up contraception for 7 days. If you miss more than two pills in a row, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose on Jolessa?

Signs of overdose on Jolessa may include exaggerated side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and spotting. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Jolessa, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Jolessa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Jolessa pills.

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially any drugs or supplements containing hormones, blood pressure medications, aspirin, NSAIDs, diuretics, blood thinners or other medications for blood clots, antibiotics, valproic acid, St. John’s wort and potassium or folate supplements.

  • You regularly smoke cigarettes.

  • You have ever had a stroke, heart attack or blood clot.

  • You have ever had breast cancer or breast lumps.

  • You have ever had any cancer of the reproductive system.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

  • You have diabetes.

  • You have gallbladder or liver disease.

  • You suffer from migraines.

  • You suffer from depression.

What are the possible side effects of taking Jolessa?

Common side effects from taking birth control pills like Jolessa include nausea, bloating, breast tenderness and spotting between periods. These side effects should lessen over time. Jolessa can increase your chances of developing a blood clot and having a stroke or heart attack. If any of these side effects are severe, or if they don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include depression, breast lumps, yellow skin or eyes, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain in the jaw, chest or left arm, slurred speech, severe headaches, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, vision changes, and pain or swelling in the groin or calf. If you miss a period while taking Jolessa, tell your doctor right away.

How do I store Jolessa?

Keep Jolessa pills in a place where you will always remember to take them, but keep them out of reach of children and pets. Store Jolessa at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Smoking cigarettes can greatly increase your chances of dangerous side effects such as having a stroke or heart attack. Tell your doctor if you smoke and/or are over the age of 35. Birth control such as Jolessa can also increase your risk of developing breast cancer and other cancers of the reproductive system. In rare cases, Jolessa may cause dark spots to develop on your skin or changes in vision. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
