About Lutera

What is Lutera?

Combination hormone contraceptives, like Lutera, use a combination of estrogen and progestin to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Taking these hormones prevent fertility in women. Estrogen and progestin prevent ovulation, a process that allows an egg to leave the ovary. Without an egg outside of the ovary, the sperm has nothing to fertilize. Birth control hormones make the cervical mucus thicker, creating a barrier between the eggs and the sperm. The hormones in Lutera also thin the lining of the uterus, creating a difficult environment for a fertilized egg to implant.

How do I take Lutera?

Before you visit the pharmacy, save money on your birth control prescription with a Lutera coupon from FamilyWize. Your prescription will come in a package of 28 pills. 21 pills contain hormones. The last 7 pills of the pack are reminder pills, and contain no medicine. Take one pill per day, at the same time each day. In order for the pill to be effective, you must take it at the same time every day. Pick a time of day that will be easy for you to remember.

  • If you are starting hormonal birth control, take the first pill on the first day of your period, or the Sunday following the first day of your menstrual cycle.

  • For the first week of use for a Sunday-starter, use a back-up birth control method.

  • If you start the pill on the first day of your period, you do not need back up birth control.

  • If you are switching from another form of birth control, take Lutera at your regular time.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lutera?

If you forget to take a dose of Lutera, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. This may mean taking 2 pills in one day. If that happens, take your second pill at the regular time.

What happens if I overdose on Lutera?

Take Lutera only as directed. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical help, or contact the poison control center: 1-800-222-1222. Signs of excessive use include severe nausea and vaginal bleeding.

Before taking Lutera, tell your doctor if:

  • You smoke.

  • You take any other hormonal forms of birth control.

  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications or herbal supplements.

  • You have ever had a blood clot.

  • You’ve ever had breast cancer or a cancer of the reproductive system.

  • You have heart, liver, or kidney disease.

  • You are planning to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.

Go over the list of ingredients in Lutera with your doctor, to make sure you don’t have an allergy to any of the hormones, or any of the other ingredients.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lutera?

Possible side effects from taking Lutera include nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, weight change, and vaginal bleeding between periods. Spotting or missed/irregular periods may occur, especially during the first few months of use.

If any of these effects persist or worsen, seek medical advice. If you miss 2 periods in a row (or 1 period if the pill has not been used properly), you may be pregnant. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • Lumps in the breast

  • Mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression)

  • Severe stomach/abdominal pain

  • Unusual changes in vaginal bleeding

  • Dark urine

  • Yellowing eyes/skin.

  • Swelling of the feet or ankles

  • Unusual weakness or fainting

How do I store Lutera?

Store Lutera at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of the reach of children.
