About Pexeva

What is Pexeva?

Pexeva is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This type of antidepressant acts on the brain chemical serotonin and may help improve mood, energy levels, appetite, sleep, and interest in daily activities. It may be prescribed to treat depression, anxiety disorders, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It is also sometimes prescribed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders and may help reduce repetitive compulsions.

How do I take Pexeva?

The strength of Pexeva and your dosage schedule will be based on your condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions very carefully, and never take more of this medication than you have been prescribed. Take the tablets by mouth with or without food. If you become nauseated easily, it may be best to take the Pexeva drug with food. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Continue taking this medication on your prescribed schedule even if you feel better, as stopping suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pexeva?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for another dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not double your dose.

What happens if I overdose on Pexeva?

Overdosing on Pexeva is very dangerous and may cause extreme dizziness, an irregular heart rhythm, fainting, or seizures. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately. If the person who overdosed has lost consciousness, call 911.

Before taking Pexeva, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days

  • You are being treated with a methylene blue injection

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially pimozide or thioridazine

  • You have bipolar disorder or a history of suicidal thoughts

  • You have a history of substance abuse

  • You have high blood pressure, heart problems, or a history of stroke

  • You have kidney or liver disease

  • You have a blood clotting or bleeding disorder

  • You have a history or family history of narrow-angle glaucoma

  • You have epilepsy or a history of seizures

  • You have low sodium levels in your blood

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of Pexeva?

The Pexeva drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, sleep problems, lack of appetite, constipation, vision changes, dry mouth, or decreased libido or sexual performance. If you have any of these side effects and they become bothersome, inform your doctor. Call your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including unusual thoughts or behaviors, bone pain, sudden changes in weight or appetite, tremors, restlessness, easy bleeding or bruising, an irregular heart rhythm, weakness, or seizures. Get emergency medical attention if you have vomit that resembles coffee grounds, eye pain or swelling, or unusual vision changes. This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and you should always talk to your doctor if you have any side effects that concern you.

How do I store Pexeva?

Keep Pexeva at room temperature, in a tightly-sealed container and out of reach of pets and children. Do not store it in the bathroom, as heat and humidity can negatively affect it. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist to determine how to safely dispose of it.

Warnings

If you normally use an over-the-counter NSAID (such as aspirin or ibuprofen), talk to your doctor about whether you can continue using this while taking Pexeva. NSAIDs can interact with Pexeva and make you bruise or bleed more easily. Avoid alcohol, as this may exacerbate certain side effects. Do not drive or engage in any activities that require clear focus until you know how the Pexeva drug affects you, as dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired thinking are potential side effects.
