What is paroxetine hcl?

Paroxetine hydrochloride (hcl) is part of a category of medications known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Because they increase serotonin activity in the brain, they are prescribed to treat a number of disorders and illnesses including depression, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (also known as PMDD) and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). It is also prescribed to treat general anxiety disorder, and may also be used to treat hot flashes associated with menopause, chronic headaches or certain symptoms of diabetes. When combined with other medications, it is also used in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

How do I take paroxetine hcl?

Paroxetine hcl (paroxetine hydrochloride) and paroxetine ER are available as tablets, capsules, or suspension liquids, all of which are to be taken orally. All formulations are taken once a day at bedtime, unless otherwise prescribed by your physician. While it is not required that this medication be taken with food, patients may want to do so in order to prevent an upset stomach.

When taking the liquid suspension, it must be well shaken before pouring and use a measured or metered spoon or cup for accuracy. Do not split, chew, or crush the tablets or the capsules.

What if I forget to take a dose of paroxetine hcl?

If you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose of paroxetine hcl or paroxetine ER, take it as soon as your remember it. However, if it is close to time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose on paroxetine hcl?

If you suspect an overdose of paroxetine hcl or paroxetine er, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or has stopped breathing call Emergency Services at 911. There are several indicators of an overdose of this medication, include drowsiness or extreme tiredness, uncontrollable shaking or twitching, vomiting, confusion, blurred vision, difficulty walking, aggressive behavior, fever, yellowing of the eyes or skin, change in urine color, and others.

Before taking paroxetine hcl, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to paroxetine or any medications;

  • You have any allergies;

  • You are taking, or have stopped taking in the past two weeks, MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors. These include Marplan (isocarboxazid), Zyvox (linezolid), Nardi (phenelzine), and others;

  • You are taking thioridazine or primozide;

  • You are taking methylene blue;

  • You are taking any medications or supplements including blood thinners (anticoagulants), anti-depressants, over-the-counter or prescription pain medications, and antihistamines;

  • You are taking herbal supplements;

  • You are taking any medications for migraines;

  • You are taking any medications for mental illness;

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;

  • You are taking medications to control seizures;

  • You have ever used street drugs (and what they were);

  • You have abused prescription medications (and what they were);

  • You are having surgery.

What are the possible side effects of taking paroxetine hcl?

There are several side effects associated with taking paroxetine hcl; the most common of these include nervousness, drying of sinus passages and nasal irritation, drowsiness, dizziness, mild nausea, and insomnia. Call you physician if any of these persist or worsen while taking this medication.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following after taking paroxetine hcl or paroxetine er: hallucinations, rapid or irregular heart rate, rigidity in the muscles, unusual bruising, swelling, or bone pain, unusual bleeding, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, problems with concentration or memory, confusion, loss of coordination, fainting, feeling like you are about to faint, seizures, shallow breathing, or breathing stops.
