About Paxil

What is Paxil?

Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) is an orally-administered psychotropic drug indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorders. Paxil uses may also include the treatment of certain anxiety orders, panic attacks, and OCD. Its efficacy has been proved through six week drug trials. Each Paxil film-coated tablet contains paroxetine hydrochloride. Paxil is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and helps improve mood, sleep, appetite, energy levels, and may also help restore interest in daily living. Paxil medication may also serve to decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, the number of panic attacks, and may reduce the urge to perform repeated tasks or compulsions, such as hand-washing, counting, and checking.

How do I take Paxil?

Fill your prescription for Paxil medication in your local pharmacy using our free printable Paxil coupons or discount card to lower the cost. Paxil should be taken only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it longer than the time ordered by your doctor. The dosage you take and how often you take it will vary depending on the strength of the dosage and other individual factors assessed by your healthcare provider and may be altered occasionally by your doctor to ensure that you get the best results. You may take Paxil with or without food, and you should try to take it at the same time each day. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release table, but, rather, swallow it whole. Breaking open the pill may destroy its extended-release properties and cause too much of the drug to be delivered into your system at one time. If you are taking the oral suspension liquid, shake the medication well before you measure your dose. Ensure that you use a special dose measuring spoon—not a kitchen spoon or other measuring device—which your pharmacist will provide.

The usual initial dose should be administered as a single dose with or without food in the morning. The recommended starting dose is 20 mg per day. Some patients who do not respond to the initial 20 mg dose may benefit from dose increases of 10 mg per day, up to a maximum of 50 mg per day. Dose changes should occur at intervals of no more than one week.

What if I forget to take a dose of Paxil?

If you miss a dose of Paxil, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Paxil?

Ensure that you discuss with your medical professional or pharmacist the benefits and risks of Paxil. Understanding what Paxil is can help to identify side effects and overdose. An overdose of Paxil may result in somnolence, coma, nausea, tremors, tachycardia, confusion, vomiting and dizziness. Other signs and symptoms of Paxil drug overdose include mydriasis convulsions, ventricular dysrhythmias, hypertension, aggressive reactions, syncope, hypotension, stupor, bradycardia, rhabdomysolysis, symptoms of hepatic dysfunction, serotonin syndrome, manic reactions, myoclonus, acute renal failure, and urinary retention.

If you suspect a Paxil overdose, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Before taking Paxil, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to Paxil or you have other allergies.

  • You have a personal or family history of bipolar/manic-depressive disorder.

  • You have a personal or family history of suicide attempts.

  • You have liver problems.

  • You have kidney problems.

  • You experience seizures.

  • You have low sodium in your blood.

  • You have intestinal ulcers or bleeding problems.

  • You have glaucoma (narrow-angle type).

  • You are taking any over-the-counter medications.

  • You are using any home or herbal remedies.

  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.

  • You are nursing or intend to nurse while taking Paxil.

  • You become pregnant while taking Paxil.

What are the possible side effects of taking Paxil?

The following is not a complete list of possible Paxil drug side effects, however any change, whether or not listed here, should be reported to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Some patients experience allergic reactions to Paxil that will need immediate medical attention. Other side effects which should be reported to your doctor include mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, feelings of impulsiveness, irritability, agitation, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness, deeper depression, hyperactivity, or experiencing thoughts of suicide or the desire to harm yourself or others.

Serious side effects which should be immediately reported to your doctor include unusual bone pain or tenderness; swelling or bruising; unusual bleeding or coughing up blood; agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, fainting, stiff or rigid muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, tremors, or the feeling that you might pass out.

Less serious Paxil side effects include feeling restless or nervous, a mild headache, drowsiness or dizziness, sleep problems, mild nausea, constipation, changes in weight, decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty reaching orgasm, dry mouth, or ringing in your ears. You may have thoughts of suicide when you begin antidepressant therapy, particularly if you are younger than 24 years old. Ensure that you discuss any Paxil side effects or changes in dosing with your healthcare provider.

How do I store Paxil?

Paxil should be stored at room temperature and should be protected from light and from moisture. Do not store Paxil medication in your bathroom and ensure that it remains out of the reach of children and pets. Do not flush any unused Paxil medication down the toilet or pour down a drain unless instructed to do so by your pharmacist or medical professional. Consult your pharmacist to discuss proper methods to discard any unused or expired medication.

Warnings

Paxil may impair your thinking or reactions. While taking Paxil, you should not operate a car or other machinery or engage in dangerous activities until you are certain how Paxil will affect you. Do not drink alcohol while taking Paxil.

Both adult and pediatric patients with major depressive disorders may experience a worsening of their depression and the emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. There has long been concern that antidepressants may play a role in worsening the symptoms of depression and the potential for suicide in certain patients during the early stages of treatment.

Paxil may cause heart defects or serious lung problems in newborns if taken during pregnancy. To prevent a depression relapse from a sudden withdrawal of the Paxil medication, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your doctor

Paxil and other antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be observed closely for negative changes in behavior.
