About Lexapro

What is Lexapro?

Lexapro is an antidepressant of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) classification, used in the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), although it may be prescribed for other conditions. It helps restore and maintain mental balance by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain.

How do I take Lexapro?

Use our Lexapro coupon or discount card to buy Lexapro in your local pharmacy. Available as either a solution or a tablet, the Lexapro drug is taken orally, once a day, ideally at the same time every day. Follow the instructions on the prescription exactly; if you are experiencing difficulty taking Lexapro, patient assistance is available through your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lexapro?

If you forget your regularly scheduled dose of your Lexapro medication, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose in the cycle, do not take the missed dose, but wait and take the next scheduled one at the proper time. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for those missed.

What happens if I overdose on Lexapro?

If an individual overdoses on his or Lexapro, patient assistance can be obtained by calling Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the patient has collapsed, lapsed into unconsciousness, or stopped breathing contact Emergency Services at 911. Additional overdose symptoms include dizziness, sweating, tremors, nausea or vomiting, seizures, arrhythmia or rapid heartbeat, increased respiration rate, and confusion or forgetfulness.

Before taking Lexapro, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to citalopram or other SSRIs;

  • You are taking any medications (prescribed or over-the-counter), vitamins, or supplements;

  • You are taking MAOs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), or have recently stopped taking them (within the last two weeks);

  • You are taking any antidepressants, sleeping pills, sedatives, or tranquilizers;

  • You have had a heart attack or have heart disease;

  • You have seizures;

Less severe side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain or heartburn, changes in appetite, diminished sex drive, malaise, sneezing, runny nose, and flu-like symptoms.
