About Oxtellar XR

What is Oxtellar XR?

Oxtellar XR is the extended-release formula of the anti-seizure medication oxcarbazepine, an anticonvulsant used to treat partial seizures in those with epilepsy. It works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain, diminishing nerve impulses. It may be prescribed in conjunction with other medications.

How do I take Oxtellar XR?

Oxtellar XR is administered in tablet form and is taken orally, once a day on an empty stomach (at least one hour before, or two hours after a meal). Swallow the tablet whole; do not break, crush, or chew it. If you are having difficulty swallowing the tablet, contact your doctor for Oxtellar XR patient assistance. It is recommended that you carry or wear a medical alert ID while taking this drug. Do not stop taking this medication without first notifying your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Oxtellar XR?

Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, if you miss a scheduled dose of Oxtellar XR, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular dosing regimen. Do not take more than one tablet or increase the dosing frequency to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Oxtellar XR?

If an overdose of Oxtellar XR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
