About Istalol

What is Istalol?

Istalol is a beta-blocker drug used to reduce pressure inside the eye. It is primarily prescribed to treat open-angle glaucoma, but it may also be prescribed to treat certain other conditions that cause high pressure in the eyes.

How do I use Istalol?

Istalol eye drops are usually applied to the eyes once a day. However, your exact dosage will depend on your condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. To apply the eye drops, tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down. Gently squeeze a drop into your eye while looking up and away from the applicator. Close your eye and place one finger over the inside corner of the eye for about a minute to keep any liquid from leaking out. If you have been instructed to apply more than one drop to each eye, wait about five minutes before applying another drop. After you have finished with one eye, repeat this process with the other.

What if I forget to take a dose of Istalol?

If you miss a dose of Istalol, apply the eye drops as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not apply more eye drops than you normally would for a single dose.

What happens if I overdose on Istalol?

Overdosing on Istalol may cause severe headaches, dizziness, a slow heartbeat, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or fainting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-122 right away. If the person who overdosed has lost consciousness or is having difficulty breathing, call 911 or take them to the nearest emergency room.

Before using Istalol, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to this or any other medications • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements • You have a condition that causes breathing problems (including asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) • You have any heart problems • You have diabetes • You have kidney or liver disease • You have a muscle disorder • You have a thyroid disorder • You have ever had a blood clot, stroke, or circulation problems • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of using Istalol?

Potential side effects of the Istalol drug include temporary vision changes, stinging in the eyes, tinnitus, headache, nausea, drowsiness, upset stomach, loss of appetite, numbness in the hands or feet, cough, or congestion. If you have any side effects that last a long time or bother you, let your doctor know. Stop using this medication and call your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including unusual mood changes, difficulty breathing, eye or eyelid redness, eyelid swelling, discharge from your eyes, chest pain, or sudden weight gain.

How do I store Istalol?

When not using Istalol, make sure the cap is tightly closed on the bottle. Keep the bottle out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Do not store it in the bathroom, as heat and moisture can negatively affect the medication. If you have unused medication that you no longer need, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.

Warnings

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Istalol, and wait for at least fifteen minutes after the application before putting them back in. Because Istalol can cause blurred or double vision, avoid driving and participating in any other activities that require clear vision until you know how the medication affects you.

Brand Name

Istalol is a brand name drug, and there is no cheaper generic equivalent at this time. If this brand name medication is not covered by your health insurance, be sure to use an Istalol coupon or discount card to help you save up to 75% on your prescription.
