About Cosopt

What is Cosopt?

Cosopt is a topical solution consisting of dorzolamide ophthalmic (a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor) and timolol ophthalmic (a topical beta blocker). It is prescribed to treat ocular hypertension, glaucoma, and other eye conditions. Dorzolamide reduces fluid production and timolol reduces eye pressure.

How do I take Cosopt?

Cosopt is a topical ophthalmic solution that is administered using an eye dropper, usually twice daily. Follow the dosing instructions that accompanied the prescription. If you have never used this type of medication, ask your healthcare provider for assistance. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using Cosopt. Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or let it touch the eye. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, squeeze the dropper, and dispense one drop of the medicine into this pouch. Close your eye for two or three minutes with your head tilted down while applying gentle pressure to the tear duct. Do not blink or squeeze your eyelids. Wipe off any excess. If you are applying more than on drop, wait five minutes before the next.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cosopt?

If you forget to apply Cosopt at the scheduled time, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or alter the dosing frequency to compensate for ones that are missed.

What happens if I overdose on Cosopt?

If an overdose of Cosopt is suspected, or if it has been accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Cosopt patient assistance. Signs of an overdose include chest pain, confusion, difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, or headache.

Before taking Cosopt, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to dorzolamide, timolol, or any of the ingredients in Cosopt

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially another topical eye medication, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, salicylate pain relievers, diuretics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, clonidine; digoxin, or quinidine

  • You have, or have had, asthma, any lung disease, myasthenia gravis, or severe allergic reactions

  • You have, or have had, hyperthyroidism or heart, liver, or kidney disease

  • You wear contact lenses

What are the possible side effects of taking Cosopt?

Some individuals have reported side effects after using Cosopt. Less severe side effects include dry, itchy, watery, burning or stinging eyes, changes to taste, and dizziness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Cosopt patient assistance. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), pink eye, blurry vision, muscle weakness, or a red or swollen eyelid.

How do I store Cosopt?

Keep Cosopt tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the Cosopt drug to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.

Warnings

This medication is for topical use only. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using the Cosopt drug. Remove contact lenses before administering this medication and wait at least fifteen minutes before replacing them.
