About Timoptic

What is Timoptic?

Timoptic is the drug timolol, a non-selective beta blocker. It is a topical medication prescribed to reduce the pressure in the eye(s) of those who have open-angle glaucoma or other conditions that cause pressure to build. Timoptic works by decreasing eye pressure.

How do I take Timoptic?

Timoptic is instilled into the eyes using an eyedropper. It is usually applied once or twice a day at measured intervals until the pressure has come under control. Once this point is reached, dosing may be reduced to once a day. However, the actual regimen will be determined by the strength of the medication, the condition being treated, and the patient’s medical profile. If you have never used this type of medication before, ask your healthcare provider to demonstrate the proper procedure. Follow the dosing and instillation instructions that accompanied the prescription, and continue to use the medication even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Timoptic without first informing your doctor. If the medication causes your vision to blur, do not rub your eyes; wait for your vision to clear.

What if I forget to take a dose of Timoptic?

If you forget your scheduled instillation of Timoptic, use it as soon as you remember and are able, unless the time is near for the next scheduled dose. In this instance, skip the one missed and return to the original schedule. Do not increase the amount applied or change the schedule to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Timoptic?

Timoptic is for external use only. If it has been accidentally ingested or too much has been instilled, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If breathing has stopped or consciousness has been lost, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Timoptic, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to beta blockers, timolol, or any of the ingredients in the Timoptic drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are using other topical eye medications

  • You have, or have had, heart disease or congestive heart failure

  • You have, or have had, myasthenia gravis, lung disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, or any other medical condition

What are the possible side effects of taking Timoptic?

Timoptic users have reported mild side effects including depression, double vision, eye irritation, nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness. If these conditions do not go away or they get worse, contact your doctor. Severe side effects such as allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, arrhythmia or slowed heartbeat, swelling of the extremities, sudden weight gain, or fainting require immediate medical attention.

How do I store Timoptic?

Keep Timoptic tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not allow the solution to freeze. Dispose of the medication if it becomes cloudy or discolored. Dispose of any expired or unused amount according to the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings

Timoptic may blur your vision; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until your vision clears. Do not rub your eyes after using this medication if your vision is blurry. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Remove contact lenses prior to instilling Timoptic and do not put them in for at least 15 minutes after using the medication. Inform your doctor if you have eye surgery or develop an eye infection or injury.
