About Isentress

What is Isentress?

The Isentress drug is an antiviral, HIV integrase inhibitor that works by preventing the human immune deficiency virus from multiplying in the blood. While it may prevent AIDS from developing, it does not cure HIV or AIDS, nor does it prevent the spread of HIV.

How do I take Isentress?

Isentress is available as a tablet, or a chewable tablet; either is taken orally twice a day, with or without food. Do not bite or chew the tablet unless it specifically labeled “chewable.” It is recommended that the Isentress drug be taken at the same time every day in order to establish a routine. It is important that this medication continue to be taken, even if the patient is feeling better, as discontinuation could make the virus resistant to any form of treatment, causing the condition to deteriorate. Unless otherwise directed, there is no need to alter your diet.

What if I forget to take a dose of Isentress?

If a regularly scheduled dose of Isentress is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is near to the time for the next regularly scheduled dosage, skip the missed one and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses to make up for one missed.

What happens if I overdose on Isentress?

If an overdose of Isentress is suspected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Isentress, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to raltegravir or any of the ingredients in the Isentress medication

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child

  • You engage in unprotected sex

  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements

  • You are taking any medications, especially statins or any cholesterol-lowering medication

  • You are taking rifampin

  • You have, or have had, hepatitis

What are the possible side effects of taking Isentress?

Some who are taking Isentress have reported side effects. Less severe symptoms include gastro-intestinal problems such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or stomach pain; general malaise or muscle weakness; pale skin; headaches; and dizziness. If any of these persist or worsen, contact your healthcare professional immediately.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include rash; tender or painful muscles, changes in urine color or frequency of urination; pressure in the chest or chest pain; tachycardia; excessive sweating, changes in appetite, lack of energy, or muscle fatigue; symptoms of an allergic reaction (itching, rash, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, tongue, or throat); pain in the upper right quadrant of the stomach; symptoms of jaundice; and swelling of the legs, ankles, or feet.

How do I store Isentress?

Keep Isentress tightly sealed in its original container, away from extremes of temperature and humidity, and out of the reach of children. Unused or expire dosages should be disposed according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Isentress may cause a fatal skin reaction; may cause kidney failure. Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while you are taking this medication. Isentress does not prevent the spread of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases; does not cure HIV or AIDS. May increase body fat or cause its redistribution to other areas of the body.
