About Prezista

What is Prezista?

Prezista is an antiretroviral drug that is used to HIV-1. It is often prescribed along with another antiviral medication called ritonavir. Ritonavir helps increase the efficacy of Prezista. Prezista is not a cure for HIV but it decreases the amount of the virus in the blood and helps to decrease the chance of developing AIDS and other illnesses. Prezista is an HIV protease inhibitor drug, meaning it inhibits the replication of the HIV virus.

How do I take Prezista?

Prezista is normally taken once or twice per day with food. Prezista should be taken along with a dose of ritonavir. Otherwise, it will not be effective. Usually a dose of 600 or 800mg is prescribed for adults. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions for your individual requirements.

What if I forget to take a dose of Prezista?

If you are supposed to take Prezista twice a day and miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember as long as it has been less than six hours. If it has been over six hours, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule.

If you take Prezista once per day and less than 12 hours have passed since you missed a dose, take the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. If it has been over twelve hours, skip the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Prezista?

There are limited reports of overdose on Prezista. Signs of overdose may be similar to side effects. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Prezista, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Prezista, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • You are allergic to sulfa drugs or any of the ingredients in Prezista.

  • You have kidney or liver disease.

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including any other antivirals, blood thinners, antifungals, sildenafil, cholesterol medications, seizure medications, corticosteroids, contraceptives, antibiotics and any other medications.

  • You have diabetes or high blood sugar levels.

  • You have hemophilia.

  • You have cytomegalovirus (CMV).

  • You have tuberculosis or pneumonia or any infections that haven’t gone away.

What are the possible side effects of taking Prezista?

Prezista may cause adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and headache. If any of these side effects are severe or do not go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about immediately include joint pain, muscle weakness, unexplained weight loss, bulging eyes, fast or irregular heartbeat, vision changes, severe fatigue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, paralysis, slurred speech or signs of infection such as fever and chills.

How do I store Prezista?
