About Diltiazem HCL

Diltiazem HCl (hydrochloride) belongs to the calcium channel blocker class of drugs. It alters the amount of calcium in your heart and muscle cells, which helps blood vessels to relax so that blood can flow more easily. When taken as directed, diltiazem HCl helps reduce chest pain. It can also be used to control heart rate in people with certain heart rhythm disorders.

Take diltiazem HCl by mouth as often as directed by your doctor (usually three to four times per day). Swallow each tablet whole; do not chew or crush this medicine. If you have difficulty swallowing, ask your doctor about alternate ways to take this drug. Don’t suddenly stop taking diltiazem HCl without talking to your doctor, as suddenly quitting a dosing regimen may make your condition worse.

It’s important to stick to a regular schedule when taking diltiazem HCl. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose when you remember, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Don’t take two doses at the same time or close to the same time.

Overdosing on diltiazem HCl can be very dangerous and may cause chest pain, a slow heart rate, weakness, shortness of breath, and fainting. In some cases, overdosing on this medication can be fatal. Get emergency medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect that someone in your home has overdosed.

Before taking diltiazem HCl, tell your doctor if:

· You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine

· You are taking any other medications, especially any beta blockers

· You have a serious heart condition that isn’t being treated with a pacemaker

· You have dangerously low blood pressure

· You have recently had a heart attack

· You have congestive heart failure

· You have a history of fluid build-up in your lungs

· You have liver or kidney disease

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

The most commonly reported side effects of diltiazem HCl include dizziness, weakness, nausea, constipation, and headache. If any of these side effects lasts a long time or becomes bothersome, inform your doctor. Reduce your risk of becoming dizzy by standing slowly after sitting or lying down. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following severe side effects: an irregular heart rate, swollen feet or ankles, shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, sudden weight gain, unusual mood changes, fainting, stomach or abdominal pain, dark urine, jaundice, or a skin reaction.

Store your diltiazem HCl medicine in a tightly-sealed container at room temperature. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. Refer to the prescription label for additional storage instructions, and ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of any medicine that has expired or is no longer necessary.

Don’t drink alcohol, consume grapefruit products, or take herbal supplements with St. John’s wort while taking diltiazem HCl. These substances may interact with the medication and cause side effects. Diltiazem HCl may make you dizzy, so don’t drive or perform other tasks that require attentiveness until you know you can do so safely.

Brand Names

Diltiazem HCl is available as a generic and as the brand name drug Cardizem. There are also several extended-release versions of this medication, including Tiazac, Diltzac, and Dilacor XR. Because these medications do not all work in the same way, they’re not interchangeable. Your doctor will help you determine the best treatment option for your angina. “I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
