About Amlodipine Besylate

What is Amlodipine Besylate?

Amlodipine Besylate lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, which decreases the strain on the heart. It also allows more blood to access the heart, helping with long-term chest pain. Additional medication may be required for immediate relief of chest pain.

How do I take Amlodipine Besylate?

Amlodipine Besylate comes in an easy-to-take tablet that is generally taken once a day. The tablets come in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg doses. Doctors generally begin the process at the lowest dosage and increase the amount as needed. It can be taken with or without food, but should be taken with a full glass of water. Follow all the instructions given to you by your doctor.

What happens if I overdose on amlodipine besylate?

If you overdose on amlodipine besylate, immediately contact your local poison control center or go to your local emergency center. Common symptoms of an overdose include dizziness, fainting, or rapid heartbeat. Even if none of these symptoms persist, seek immediate medical help. Urgent relief may still be required.

Before taking Amlodipine Besylate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have severe coronary artery disease because amlodipine besylate can increase chest pain or, in rare cases, increase the likelihood of heart attack.

  • You are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant

  • You are currently taking a beta blocker

  • You are allergic to amlodipine or any other medication

  • You have ever had heart failure or liver disease

  • You are on any other medications

  • You are planning to have surgery or otherwise use an anesthetic

What are the possible side effects of taking amlodipine besylate?

Tell your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or persistent while taking amlodipine besylate:

  • Swelling of the extremities

  • Headache

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Drowsiness or excessive tiredness

  • Flushing (unusual warmth)

  • Palpitations

More severe side effects are uncommon, but should be addressed immediately if they occur. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following.

  • Drowsiness or excessive tiredness

  • Flushing (unusual warmth)

How do I store amlodipine besylate?

Store amlodipine besylate at room temperature in a tight, light resistant container.

What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What other information should I know?

Keep all appointments with your doctor. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to amlodipine.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
