About Cartia Xt

Cartia XT is used to treat high blood pressure and to control angina, and it is in a class of medications called calcium-channel blockers. Cartia XT works by relaxing the blood vessels and helps to lower your heart rate. This medication also helps to increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart so the heart does not have to pump as hard.

High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. Lowering blood pressure can help to prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, not smoking, and consuming alcohol in moderation.

Cartia XT is also sometimes used to treat certain types of arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms). This medication may also be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Cartia XT comes in tablet form and should be taken by mouth once a day or as prescribed by your doctor. You should take Cartia XT at the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take diltiazem exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

If taken regularly, Cartia XT may control chest pain, but it does not stop chest pain once it starts. Your doctor may give you a different medication to take when you have chest pain.

It may take up to 2 weeks before you feel the full benefit of taking Cartia XT. Do not stop taking Cartia XT without talking to your doctor.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
