About Depo-Estradiol

Depo-Estradiol is a female estrogen hormone. It replaces the body’s natural estrogen when not enough is being produced. This medication is prescribed to menopausal patients to treat their symptoms, as well as to other female-bodied people who have low levels of estrogen due to other medical conditions.

Depo-Estradiol is given as an injection, usually at your doctor’s office, a hospital, or clinic. If you’ll be using it at home, your health care provider will teach you how to use it. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Never use two doses at once.

If you think you’ve overdosed, contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers) or go to the emergency room. Symptoms of an overdose can include excessive vaginal bleeding, severe nausea, and vomiting.

Before using Depo-Estradiol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

  • You are taking any medications

  • You have allergies to medicines or food

  • You have breast lumps or disease, or a family history of breast cancer of blood clots

  • You have yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes during pregnancy or with past estrogen use

  • You smoke, are overweight, or will be having surgery

  • You have a history of alcohol or substance abuse

Common side effects may include abnormal hair growth, breast tenderness, changes in sex drive; cramps, dizziness, flushing, hair loss, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; reduced tolerance to carbohydrates, stomach bloating and upset, vaginal infection, and weight changes. Talk to your doctor if these persist or become bothersome. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: abnormal vaginal bleeding, breast lumps, calf pain or tenderness, changes in vision or speech, chest pain, coughing up blood, mental or mood changes, numbness of an arm or leg, one-sided weakness, pain, swelling, or tenderness in the stomach, severe headache, fainting, vomiting, sudden shortness of breath, swelling of hands or feet, unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor; or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Depo-Estradiol is usually stored by your healthcare provider. If you’re using it at home, follow your doctor’s instructions for storage and care. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
