About Delzicol

What is Delzicol?

Delzicol is classified as an amino salicylate, non-aspirin, anti-inflammatory gastro-intestinal agent that aids in the treatment and prevention of ulcerative colitis, proctosigmoiditis, and proctitis and their recurrence. It works by reducing inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea.

How do I take Delzicol?

Delzicol is prescribed in capsule form that is taken orally with water, and with or without food. Do not split, bite, or chew the capsule. Your physician will prescribe the frequency of dosage, and all dosages must be consumed during the treatment period.

What if I forget to take a dose of Delzicol?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Delzicol, do so as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next capsule, skip the missed one and resume the prescribed pattern. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Delzicol?

If an overdose of Delzicol is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Delzicol patient assistance.

Before taking Delzicol, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to mesalamine or any of the ingredients in the Delzicol capsule • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements • You are allergic to any salicylate medications, olsalazine, sulfasalazine, or balsalazide • You have, or have had, pericarditis or myocarditis • You have, or have had, kidney, heart, or liver disease • You have PKU (phenylketonuria)

What are the possible side effects of taking?

Some who have taken Delzicol have reported side effects. Mild side effects include back, joint, or muscle pain; tight, stiff, or aching muscles; nausea, heartburn, gas, constipation, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, diminished (or lost) appetite, acne, slight hair loss, or sweating. However, if any of these problems persist or worsen after taking Delzicol, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

Severe Delzicol side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, or swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, throat, or face), chest pain, shortness of breath or other breathing difficulties, tarry stools, vomiting blood, swelling in any area of the body, or vomiting what looks like coffee grounds.

How do I store Delzicol?

Keep Delzicol in a secure location, tightly sealed and out of the reach of children, away from extremes of heat, cold, and humidity. Any unused or expired capsules should be disposed according to the directives of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Inform your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Delzicol. Because this medication may cause dizziness, do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools until you understand its effects. Delzicol may cause Reye Syndrome; do not administer to children or teenagers who have a fever.
