About Brilinta

What is Brilinta?

The prescription drug Brilinta (ticagrelor) is a type of anticlotting medication known as an antiplatelet medication. It works by preventing blood platelets from coagulating into clots that can cause heart attack, stroke, or other vascular problems. It is usually prescribed to patients who have recently experienced angina (chest pain) or a heart attack.

How do I take Brilinta?

This medication comes as a 90mg tablet, and is normally prescribed to be taken as 1 pill 2 times daily either with or without food. Take Brilinta at the same times every day to ensure efficacy. Brilinta is prescribed to be taken with aspirin. Please note, follow your doctor's instructions about how much aspirin to take explicitly. Taking too much aspirin will lower Brilinta's effectiveness.Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor, even if you experience signs of unusual bleeding, as this greatly increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

What if I forget to take a dose of Brilinta?

Never take a double dose of Brilinta to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you can take your dose as soon as you remember it.

What happens if I overdose on Brilinta?

Signs of overdose include excessive bleeding. If this is the case, seek immediate emergency medical assistance and notify personnel that you're taking Brilinta.

Other signs of overdose are irregular heartbeat, nausea and vomiting, or diarrhea. Call your local poison control center or emergency medical assistance if you suspect an overdose.

Before taking Brilinta, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or may become pregnant or begin breastfeeding. • You are taking other medications, especially NSAIDs, heart rhythm medications, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, antibiotics, antifungals, antiseizure medications, tuberculosis medications, HIV/AIDS medications, blood thinners, certain cancer medications, or certain heart disease medications. • You have recently had surgery or are planning to have surgery, especially bypass surgery. • You have any active bleeding. • You have or have a history of liver disease. • You have or have a history of bleeding in the brain, including from accidents. • You have or have a history of bleeding disorders. • You have or have a history of asthma or COPD. • You have had or have a history of stroke. • You have or have a history of ulcers or colon polyps.

What are the possible side effects of taking Brilinta?

Common side effects of this medication only need your doctor's attention if they worsen or persist. These include: back pain, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea, tired feeling.

However, some of Brilinta's side effects are life threatening and require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (hives, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), bleeding that will not stop, coughing up blood, vomiting blood (may look similar to coffee grounds), blood in your stool or urine, unusual bleeding from soft tissues (nose, gums, anus), unusual bruising (especially with purple-colored pinpoints), a heavy feeling, chest pain with sweating or nausea that spreads to the arm or shoulder, sudden numbness, sudden weakness, sudden severe headache, sudden confusion or inability to speak, sudden loss of balance, sudden vision problems, feeling weak or faint (even with mild exertion), paleness, jaundice.

Warnings

Always tell your doctor and surgeon when you are about to have surgery, even dental surgery, as you may need to discontinue taking Brilinta in order to avoid complications. Brilinta can cause life threatening blood loss under certain circumstances. Discuss potential risks and problem signs (e.g., bleeding that lasts a long time) with your doctor. Be especially careful while shaving.

Consuming alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract while taking Brilinta. You need to watch your aspirin intake while taking Brilinta; consult your doctor or pharmacist when taking other OTC medications to ensure they do not contain aspirin.

This Brilinta drug page is not intended to be a complete guide for determining prescription or dosage. For full information and other Brilinta patient assistance, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
