About Welchol

What is Welchol?

Welchol, or colesevelam in its generic form, is a bile acid sequestrant medication that is used to reduce high LDL levels in adults with hyperlipidemia. It may be taken alone or along with another cholesterol medication such as a statin. Welchol works differently from statins that work in the liver. Welchol works by blocking the reabsorption of bile acids into the intestine which eventually causes it to deplete. This causes the body to use cholesterol to make more bile. This need for more cholesterol causes the liver to process more LDL cholesterol from the blood.

The typical dose of Welchol is six tablets once daily or three tablets twice daily. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular condition. This medication should be taken along with a meal and a glass of water or other liquid. For best results, Welchol should be taken along with following a diet and exercise program recommended by your physician or nutritionist

What if I forget to take a dose of Welchol?

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
