About Trileptal

What is Trileptal?

Trileptal is an anticonvulsant drug of the dibenzazepine carboxamide class. It is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of seizures associated with epilepsy, and works by decreasing the impulses in the brain that cause seizures. Other Trileptal uses include the treatment of bipolar disorder. Because of the type of medication that Trileptal is, it is recommended that you carry or wear identification indicating you are taking this medication.

How do I take Trileptal?

Trileptal medication is prescribed in either tablet form or as a suspension, both of which are taken orally twice a day (every twelve hours), either with or without food; however, the regimen may be different for any given patient. If taking the oral suspension, it must be well shaken and dispensed using the oral dosing syringe that accompanies the prescription. The liquid may then be consumed directly or mixed with a small amount of water and swallowed. Trileptal tablets should be taken with water. It may be permissible to split higher doses of the tablet into smaller doses, pending doctor approval and supervision. Do not take more or less of this medication than what was prescribed and do not stop taking it without your doctor’s permission, even if you feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Trileptal?

Discuss with your doctor the protocol to follow should a scheduled dose of Trileptal be missed, including how long to wait before taking the missed one and the acceptable interval prior to the next scheduled dose. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for the one missed.
