About Triazolam

What is triazolam?

Triazolam is a benzodiazepine drug that is used to treat severe insomnia. It has sedative and hypnotic effects that slow down the central nervous system by increasing the effects of GABA neurotransmitters. It also has anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects and amnesic properties that make it possible for the user to forget recent events or experience anterograde amnesia. While this has been known to happen with regular use, it is more likely to occur with misuse or overdose. Triazolam is a short-acting drug meaning that it works quickly and doesn’t last very long. This medication is helpful for falling asleep but is not helpful for those patients who can’t sleep throughout the night or wake up too early. Triazolam can prevent stages of deep sleep and is not recommended as a long-term solution to insomnia.

How do I take triazolam?

Triazolam comes as a tablet to be taken orally. Take the amount prescribed by your doctor right before you go to bed. This medication works better if you don’t take it right after eating. Triazolam will take effect in a few minutes and you will start to feel sleepy. Only take this medication when you have at least seven or eight hours to sleep. Getting up early or taking this medication and not going to bed can lead to adverse effects and memory loss. Triazolam should only be taken for 7-10 days and not used as a long-term insomnia treatment. If you take Triazolam regularly, you can start to build up a tolerance to the medication and become dependent on it. This medication may start to affect your moods and can cause withdrawal symptoms if use is abruptly stopped after several weeks. Talk to your doctor about gradually decreasing your dosage.

What if I forget to take a dose of triazolam?

Triazolam is taken as needed. If you can’t sleep and forgot to take your dose before going to bed, only take it if you have seven to eight hours left to remain in bed.

What happens if I overdose on triazolam?

Signs of overdose on triazolam include extreme sleepiness, confusion, lack of coordination, depressed breathing, slurred speech, and coma. Signs of overdose can occur with as little as four times the regular dosage. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on triazolam, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.

Before taking triazolam, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially other sleeping medications, sedatives, tranquilizers, HIV or AIDS drugs, antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, muscle relaxers, pain relievers, anxiety medications, cold or allergy medicines, birth control pills or hormones, fungicides, pain medication, seizure medications, and blood pressure medications.

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • You are prone to drug or alcohol abuse.

  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease.

  • You have lung problems or sleep apnea.

  • You experience seizures.

  • You have a mental illness or mood disorder.

  • You are 65 or older.

What are the possible side effects of taking triazolam?

Possible side effects from taking triazolam include day-time sleepiness, fatigue, feeling hung over, feeling clumsy or unbalanced, blurred vision, headache, nervousness, and nausea. Serious side effects include sleepwalking, short-term amnesia, tremors, mood changes, hallucinations, anxiety, confusion, severe dizziness, irregular heartbeat, and strange dreams or thoughts. Report any serious side effects to your doctor at once.

How do I store triazolam?

Store triazolam in its container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
