About Edluar

What is Edluar?

Edluar (zolpidem) is in the sedative-hypnotics class of drugs. It produces a calming effect in the brain and is used to treat insomnia. It is most effective in treating insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, rather than difficulty going back to sleep after waking up. It is typically only prescribed for short-term treatment (2 weeks or less).

How do I take Edluar?

Take Edluar on an empty stomach, shortly before your normal bedtime. Place the tablet under your tongue and let it dissolve (do not swallow it). Do not take this medication unless you have time for at least 7 uninterrupted hours of sleep. Your dosage will depend on a number of factors, so pay close attention to your doctor’s instructions, and do not take more Edluar than you have been prescribed.

What if I forget to take a dose of Edluar?

You should only take Edluar when you have time to get a full night’s sleep. Therefore, if you forget to take this medication and remember halfway through the night, skip the dose and wait to take it until the next time you are able to get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

What happens if I overdose on Edluar?

Overdosing on Edluar is very dangerous and may lead to slowed breathing or falling into a comatose state. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 and seek emergency medical help right away.

Before taking Edluar, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of this medication’s ingredients

  • You have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease

  • You have any breathing problems, such as sleep apnea

  • You have any mood disorders or problems

  • You have myasthenia gravis (a muscle disease)

  • You have a history or family history of substance abuse

  • You have a history or family history of sleepwalking

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Edluar?

Because this medication has a sedating effect, it may cause dizziness or balance problems. Some people who take this medication also report lingering daytime sleepiness. If you have any side effects that persist or are bothersome, talk to your doctor about adjusting your medication or taking an alternative approach to treatment. Let your doctor know right away if you experience any memory loss, abnormal or suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression, agitation, confusion, or aggressive behavior after taking Edluar. In rare cases, people who take Edluar may engage in activities without being fully awake, such as driving, sleeping, or eating. If you know or suspect you have any of these problems, tell your doctor immediately.

How do I store Edluar?

Keep Edluar in its original packaging at room temperature, away from moisture and light. As with all prescription medications, keep Edluar out of sight and reach of any children and pets in your household. If you no longer need this medication and have leftover tablets, talk to your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of them.

Warnings

Because Edluar may cause lingering grogginess, make sure to wait at least 8 hours after taking the medication before you drive, operate heavy machinery, or engage in any other activities that require alertness. Do not drink alcohol while using Edluar. This medication may be habit-forming when used for a long period of time, so avoid taking Edluar for any longer than your doctor has prescribed it.

Brand Name

Edluar is a brand name form of zolpidem. Ambien is another well-known brand name version of zolpidem used to treat insomnia. There is also a generic form of zolpidem that comes as a tablet to be swallowed rather than dissolved. If your doctor prescribes any of these medications but you find they are not covered by your insurance, be sure to check FamilyWize for a coupon or discount card. Reduce the Edluar retail price and other prescription drug prices by as much as 75%.
