About Tobrex

What is Tobrex?

As an ophthalmic antibiotic, the Tobrex drug works by killing the bacteria causing an eye infection. Like most antibiotics, it is used on a regular basis for a relatively short treatment period and should eliminate the infection completely.

How do I take Tobrex?

Wash your hands before each Tobrex application. When you are ready to use the drops, tilt your head back and gently pull your lower eyelid down. While looking upward, gently squeeze a drop of Tobrex into the infected eye. Close your eye and hold a finger over the inside corner of the eye for about a minute to keep the medicine from leaking out. Wait about five minutes and repeat the process if your doctor has prescribed more than one drop per dose.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tobrex?

Administer the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and get back to your normal schedule. Do not apply more drops than you normally would in an effort to catch up.

What happens if I overdose on Tobrex?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on Tobrex when applying it to your eyes, but the medication may be dangerous if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has ingested some of this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Before taking Tobrex, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other antibiotics

  • You have any other known allergies

  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other eye drops

  • You have any other eye problems

  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Tobrex?

Serious side effects of the Tobrex drug are unlikely, but you may experience temporary blurred vision, mild eye discomfort, eye redness, tearing, or eyelid itching after an application. These side effects are not usually long-lasting, but let your doctor know if you notice any side effects getting worse or persisting. You should also inform your doctor if you have any other side effects that concern you.

How do I store Tobrex?

Keep the Tobrex medicine away from bright light and moisture (do not keep it in the bathroom). Store it between 46 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep it out of reach of any pets or children in your home. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

Warnings

If you wear contact lenses, leave them out while using Tobrex (it is generally a good idea to avoid wearing contacts when you have an eye infection). Do not use other eye drops while using this medication unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. When applying Tobrex, be careful to keep the tip of the dropper from touching your eye or any other surface. If this medicine causes blurred vision, do not drive until your vision has improved.

Brand Names

Tobrex is a brand name form of tobramycin. You can also find generic tobramycin at most pharmacies, and as a generic, it is usually less expensive. Ask your doctor if it is possible to use tobramycin in order to save money. If it is not, make sure to use a Tobrex coupon from FamilyWize to reduce the drug’s retail cost by up to 75%.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
