About Tobramycin-Dexamethasone

What is tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Tobramycin/dexamethasone is a sterile antibiotic and steroid combination for topical ophthalmic use and is used to treat and prevent eye infections. Tobramycin and dexamethasone work together by combining the power of an antibiotic to fight bacteria and a corticosteroid to reduce swelling.

How do I take tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Tobramycin/dexamethasone comes in the form of an eye drop and an ointment. For both, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before application.

For the eye drop, avoid touching the dropper tip against your eye in order to keep it as sanitary as possible.

While tilting your head back, pull down your lower eyelid and hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without touching it. While looking up, gently squeeze a drop into the lower eyelid. Close your eye for 2 to 3 minutes and tip your head down as though looking at the floor. Avoid blinking or squeezing your eyelids. Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a tissue. If your doctor prescribes multiple drops in the same eye, wait at least 5 minutes between when administering.

To use the eye ointment, tilt your head forward slightly. Pull the lower lid of your eye down to form a pocket. Instill a small amount of ointment into the pocket made by the lower lid and the eye. A 1/2-inch strip of ointment usually is enough unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Close your eyes and keep them closed for 1 to 2 minutes to allow the medication to be absorbed.

What if I forget to take a dose of tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Apply the missed tobramycin/dexamethasone drops or ointment as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Tobramycin/dexamethasone can be harmful if ingested. If swallowing or overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Before taking tobramycin/dexamethasone, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to dexamethasone, tobramycin, sulfites, or any other drugs.

  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, including vitamins.

  • You have or have had glaucoma or diabetes.

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

  • You wear soft contact lenses.

What are the possible side effects of taking tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following while using tobramycin/dexamethasone: changes in vision such as blurring and seeing halos around lights, pressure and pain in the eye, or the drooping of an eyelid.

How do I store tobramycin/dexamethasone?

Keep tobramycin dexamethasone in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Discard any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Warnings

Your vision may be temporarily unstable after application of tobramycin dexamethasone. Avoid driving, using machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform these activities safely.
