About Fluorometholone

What is fluorometholone?

Fluorometholone is an ophthalmic corticosteroid drug that works by inhibiting the immune system’s inflammatory response. This helps to stop itching, redness and swelling caused by allergies or other conditions that affect the eyes.

How do I take fluorometholone?

Shake the bottle of fluorometholone solution well and wash your hands before using. The frequency of use will vary by condition. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instruction. This medication is normally used 2-4 times daily. To use, pull down your lower eyelid using your finger to form a pocket. Tilt your head back and instill one drop into the pocket and hold your eye closed for several seconds. Press down on the inner corner of your eye to prevent the medicine from escaping through the tear duct. Repeat the same steps in the other eye if needed.

What if I forget to take a dose of fluorometholone?

If you forget to use a dose of fluorometholone, instill the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not instill a double dose to try to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on fluorometholone?

There are no reports of overdose on fluorometholone. This medication is for ophthalmic use only. If someone accidentally ingests fluorometholone solution, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking fluorometholone, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any type of infection – fungal, viral or bacterial.

  • You have glaucoma.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in fluorometholone solution.

What are the possible side effects of taking fluorometholone?

Possible side effects from using fluorometholone drops include increased sensitivity to light and a mild burning or stinging sensation after the drops are applied. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor. Serious but rare side effects include pain in the eyes, severe headaches, irritated eyes, changes in vision, and signs of an eye infection. Report any serious side effects to your doctor immediately.

How do I store fluorometholone?

Store fluorometholone eye drops tightly closed at a temperature between 36 and 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the solution to freeze.

Warnings

Fluorometholone drops are typically not for long term use. Long term use of corticosteroids can raise your risk of developing an infection. Long term use of fluorometholone drops can also increase eye pressure.
