About Sumaxin

What is Sumaxin?

Sumaxin is a combination drug containing sulfacetamide sodium and sulfur. It is an antibiotic, meaning that it kills bacteria that causes infections. It is primarily used to treat rosacea, acne, and seborrheic dermatitis.

How do I take Sumaxin?

Sumaxin is applied directly to the affected skin with a cleansing pad (you will receive the medication in a carton of these pads). Always wash your hands before and after applying Sumaxin, and throw away each cleansing pad after you have used it once. Continue using this topical medication regularly for as long as your doctor has instructed you to.

What if I forget to take a dose of Sumaxin?

If you forget to use Sumaxin at the time you normally do, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not use more Sumaxin cleansing pads than you normally would for a single dose.

What happens if I overdose on Sumaxin?

Sumaxin is unlikely to cause overdose symptoms when applied topically, but it may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed some of this medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Sumaxin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other sulfa drugs

  • You have any other known allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have kidney disease

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Sumaxin?

Some of the most common side effects of Sumaxin include mild itching, stinging, burning, redness, or irritation at the application site. This usually isn’t a serious problem, but let your doctor know if you have skin irritation that persists or becomes particularly bothersome. Stop using Sumaxin and contact your doctor right away if you notice any new skin rashes, mouth sores, joint pain, or a fever.

How do I store Sumaxin?

Keep Sumaxin in its originally packaging at room temperature, away from heat and humidity. Store it out of reach of children and pets, and talk to your pharmacist if you need to know how to safely dispose of any expired or unused medication.

Warnings

Keep the Sumaxin cleansing pads away from your eyes, nose, mouth, or any irritated, sunburned or broken skin. Do not use Sumaxin on any areas that your doctor has not specifically instructed you to treat with this medicine.

Brand Names

Sumaxin is a brand name drug, and at this time, there is no cheaper generic equivalent. If your doctor has prescribed this medication and you are concerned about the cost, remember to get a free Sumaxin coupon or discount card from FamilyWize.
