About Plexion

What is Plexion?

Plexion is a topical antibiotic medication that combines the antibacterial agents sulfacetamide sodium and sulfur (topical). It works by killing and controlling the growth of bacteria, and is prescribed to treat rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and acne. It may be used for other skin conditions as well.

How do I take Plexion?

Plexion is a topical medication and is dispensed as a cream, lotion, liquid cleanser, or through pre-moistened cloths. Before applying the medication, wash your hands and the affected area; if using the cleanser, leave the skin wet and massage the prescribed amount onto the affected area to create a lather. Rinse and gently dry. If using the lotion, the pre-moistened cloths, or the cream, dry the skin after washing, then massage the prescribed amount into the skin. After any application wash your hands. Do not cover the treated area without a doctor’s approval.

What if I forget to take a dose of Plexion?

If you forget to apply Plexion, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next application, skip the one missed and resume the normal regimen. Do not increase the amount applied or the frequency of application to compensate for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Plexion?

If Plexion is inadvertently ingested, or comes into contact with the eyes or mucus membranes, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Plexion, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to sulfacetamide sodium, sulfur, sulfa drugs, or any of the ingredients in Plexion

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have, or have had, kidney disease

  • You have extensive areas with skin damage

What are the possible side effects of taking Plexion?

Side effects have been reported by some patients who have used Plexion. Mild symptoms include including redness, itching, stinging, swelling, or burning in the area where the medication was applied. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), fever, mouth sores, or joint pain.

How do I store Plexion?

Keep Plexion tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature. Do not allow Plexion to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amounts according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.

Warnings

For external use only. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not allow Plexion to come in contact with the eyes, nose, vagina, or other mucus membranes.
