About Hepsera

What is Hepsera?

Hepsera is the drug adefovir, an antiviral nucleotide analog that is prescribed to treat the chronic symptoms of hepatitis B. It works by decreasing the level of the hepatitis B virus in the body. Hepsera does not cure hepatitis, prevent its complications, nor stop its spread.

How do I take Hepsera?

Hepsera is administered as a tablet that is taken orally, once a day, with water and without regard to food. Do not take more than one dose of this medication per day unless directed to do so by your physician. It is important not to miss a dose; refill your prescription at least five days before you run out. Do not stop taking this medication without permission from your doctor; continue to take Hepsera even if you feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Hepsera?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Hepsera and remember on the day scheduled, take it as soon as you are able. However, if you do not remember until the next day, skip the one missed and resume the dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose of this medication per day. Do not increase the number of pills taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Hepsera?

If an overdose of Hepsera is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include gas, loose bowel movements, appetite loss, upset stomach or discomfort, or vomiting.

Before taking Hepsera, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this adefovir or any of the ingredients in the Hepsera drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking probenecid, aminoglycoside antibiotics, amphotericin B, NSAIDs, acetaminophen, statins, vancomycin, tacrolimus, iron supplements, isoniazid, methotrexate, niacin, rifampin, or cyclosporine

  • You are taking medications to treat HIV or AIDS

  • You have, or have had, hypertension, kidney or liver disease, or diabetes

  • You have HIV/AIDS

  • You drink alcohol or use recreational or street drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking Hepsera?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Hepsera. Less severe symptoms include coughing, diarrhea, headache, indigestion, runny nose, sore throat, and weakness. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing).

How do I store Hepsera?

Keep Hepsera tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Hepsera. Sudden discontinuation of the medication may cause your hepatitis to worsen. Hepsera may cause kidney or liver damage or lactic acidosis. This drug may cause untreated HIV/AIDS to become worse.
