Epclusa is a combination drug using sofosbuvir and velpatasvir for the treatment of hepatitis C in adults. Both of these component medications are antivirals that prevent the hepatitis C virus (HCV) from multiplying in the body. Epclusa is used to treat chronic hepatitis C in adults with HCV genotypes 1,2,3,4,5, and 6. This medication is usually used in conjunction with another antiviral medicine, ribavirin, in patients with advanced cirrhosis. Due to the extensive research and small number of patients with hepatitis C, Epclusa’s price can reach over $26,000 for a monthly supply. About Epclusa

Epclusa is a combination medicine containing both sofosbuvir and velpatasvir, antiviral medications that help to prevent the hepatitis C virus (HCV) from multiplying in your body. This medication is used to treat hepatitis C virus of genotypes 1-6. It is often used alongside ribavirin in those with advanced cirrhosis.

Epclusa is most often prescribed to be taken once daily for 12 weeks. Follow your doctor’s directions and those on the prescription label. You may take Epclusa with or without food. While taking this medication, you should remain under a doctor’s supervision and may need frequent blood tests.

If you miss a dose of Epclusa, take it as soon as you remember. You should skip it if it’s close to your next scheduled dosage. Do not take any extra medication to make up for a missed dose.

If you think you’ve overdosed on Epclusa, you should immediately seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Epclusa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to either sofosbuvir or velpatasvir

  • You have kidney disease or are on dialysis

  • You have liver problems other than hepatitis C

  • You have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)

  • You have recently used a heart rhythm medication called amiodarone (such as Cordarone or Pacerone)

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or currently breastfeeding

Common side effects of this medication include headache, feeling tired, nausea, diarrhea, and problems sleeping (insomnia). You should call your doctor at once if you experience slow heartbeats, weak or shallow breathing, or low red blood cell count, which can lead to pale skin, weakness, rapid heart rate, and trouble concentrating.

This medication should be stored in its original container at room temperature away from moisture or heat.

If you take omeprazole (such as Prilosec), don’t take it for at least four hours after you have had your dose of Epclusa (with food). While this drug treats hepatitis C, it does not prevent you from passing it to other people. Do not have unprotected sex or share needles, razors, or toothbrushes. Your healthcare provider can talk to you about safe ways to prevent HCV transmission during sex. You should never share needles, even when you don’t have hepatitis C.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
