About Furosemide

What is furosemide?

Furosemide is a loop diuretic that is used to help the kidneys remove excess fluids in the body to reduce swelling or edema. It is most commonly prescribed to treat edema from congestive heart failure. Furosemide is also used to treat high blood pressure and swelling or fluid retention caused by other conditions. Furosemide is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, as it is sometimes used to mask the presence of other drugs in the body. This medication is also used sometimes given horses to horses before races to prevent bleeding from the nose.

How do I take furosemide?

Furosemide comes as an injection, liquid to be taken orally, or as a tablet. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist. If using syringes at home, be sure to follow proper sanitation, storage and disposal instructions given to you by your pharmacist. Keep syringes away from children and pets. Do not use furosemide if it appears cloudy, discolored or contains particles. Take this medication before 6:00 pm, as it may cause you to wake up several times during the night to urinate.

What if I forget to take a dose of furosemide?

If taking furosemide on a regular schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of furosemide.

What happens if I overdose on furosemide?

Symptoms of overdose on furosemide may include: dizziness or fainting, restlessness, dry mouth and increased thirst, low blood pressure, muscle pain and cramping, seizures, headaches, back pain, nausea or vomiting, and coma.

If you or someone you know has overdosed on furosemide, have someone bring you to the hospital or call emergency services at 911. Fluids will probably need to be delivered intravenously.

Before taking furosemide, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements, especially lithium, aspirin, antibiotics, sucralfate, and other diuretics.

  • You are allergic to medicines, especially sulfonamides, or any other substances.

  • You have fluid in your abdomen (ascites), hearing problems, liver problems, diabetes, high blood sugar, bladder obstruction or urinary problems, enlarged prostate, kidney problems, lupus, gout, abnormal blood electrolyte (potassium, sodium) levels, high uric acid levels, low blood protein levels, or high blood cholesterol.

  • You are dehydrated, have low blood volume, or are on a low-sodium diet.

  • You eat large amounts of licorice, drink alcohol, or use laxatives on a regular basis.

What are the possible side effects of taking furosemide?

Side effects from taking furosemide include: low potassium levels, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, bruising and unusual bleeding, calf or leg pain, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, fever, chills, or sore throat, numbness, burning, or tingling sensation; ringing in the ears or other hearing problems, severe stomach or back pain, shortness of breath, symptoms of dehydration, mental or mood changes, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle aches, cramps or spasms, drowsiness, seizures, sluggishness, unusual restlessness, loss of appetite, weakness, symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), dark urine, pale stools, jaundice, and loss of appetite.

How do I store furosemide?

Store furosemide in the container it came in at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication away from light and out of reach of children and pets. If using syringes, talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of needles.
