About Edecrin

What is Edecrin?

Edecrin is the brand name for the loop diuretic (water pill) ethacrynic acid, a medication prescribed to help treat swelling and fluid retention in those with liver disease, congestive heart failure, kidney disorders, or hypertension. It may also be used to treat certain diabetic conditions. It works by preventing the body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the kidneys to pass it out of the body through urination.

How do I take Edecrin?

Edecrin is dispensed as a tablet that is taken orally once or twice a day, depending on the prescription. It is recommended that this medication be taken in the morning and, if on a two-dose regimen, in the afternoon (to prevent nightly urination). While the Edecrin drug controls the conditions for which it is prescribed, it does not cure them; continue to take it even if you are feeling well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Edecrin?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Edecrin, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken or change the dosing regimen to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Edecrin?

If an overdose of Edecrin is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for Edecrin patient assistance. If the individual has stopped breathing or is unconscious, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Edecrin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ethacrynic acid or any of the ingredients in Edecrin

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking medications for hypertension, heart medications, diuretics, digoxin, anticoagulants, lithium, probenecid, corticosteroids, or medications for diabetes;

  • You have, or have had, liver disease or gout

  • You have, or have had, diabetes, or heart disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Edecrin?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Edecrin. Less severe symptoms include diarrhea, frequent urination, headache, appetite loss, muscle cramps, nausea, stomach pain, increased thirst, vomiting, or weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Edecrin patient assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), chills, confusion, loss of balance, hearing loss, tinnitus, sore throat, or unusual bleeding or bruising.

How do I store Edecrin?

Keep Edecrin tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired pills in accordance with the recommendations of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Edecrin may cause drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known.
