About Flurbiprofen Sodium

Flurbiprofen Sodium is used in the treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It works to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness that comes along with these conditions. This drug is in a class of medication called NSAIDs.

Flurbiprofen Sodium works by stopping the body’s production of a substance which causes the onset of pain from these conditions.

This drug is also used to treat ankylosing spondylitis. It can also be prescribed for other uses. Speak to your doctor about the risks and rewards of using Flurbiprofen Sodium for your condition.

Flurbiprofen Sodium is a tablet which should be taken by mouth. It should be taken two to four times per day, around the same times each day. Follow all of the directions on the prescription label, as well as any that your doctor gives you. If you have any questions, ask your doctor before beginning this drug. Take Flurbiprofen Sodium exactly as directed, without taking more or less of it than prescribed.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Warnings

Patients who take NSAIDs (like Flurbiprofen Sodium) have a greater risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke than those who do not take them. These events have no warning and can cause death. Those taking NSAIDs for a long period of time have an even higher risk. If you have recently had a heart attack, do not take this medication unless instructed to do so by your doctor. You should tell your doctor if you have a family history of heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. You should also let your doctor know if you smoke, or have ever had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Get emergency help right away if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness in one part or side of the body, or slurred speech, as these may be signs of a heart attack or stroke. If you will be undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft you should not take this medication right before or after surgery.

NSAIDs can also cause ulcers, bleeding and holes in the stomach or intestine. These can develop at any time during your treatment without warning, and may cause death. This risk is even higher in those who take this drug for long periods of time, are in old age, have poor health, or drink large amounts of alcohol.

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medications: anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); aspirin; other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn); oral steroids such as dexamethasone, methylprednisolone (Medrol), and prednisone (Rayos); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, Selfemra, in Symbyax), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Brisdelle, Paxil, Pexeva), and sertraline (Zoloft); or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as desvenlafaxine (Khedezla, Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), and venlafaxine (Effexor XR).

You should also tell your doctor if you have ever had ulcers or bleeding in the stomach and intestines or other bleeding disorders. If you experience stomach pain, heartburn, vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds, blood in the stool, or black and tarry stools, you need to stop taking Flurbiprofen Sodium immediately and call your doctor.

Keep all appointments with your doctor. You will be monitored for symptoms and will be tested to check for your body’s response to Flurbiprofen Sodium.
