About Azopt

What is Azopt?

Azopt is the brand name of the drug brinzolamide in an ophthalmic solution. An antiglaucoma, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, it is prescribed to treat wide-angle glaucoma (ocular hypertension) and the pressure it exerts on the eye. It decreases pressure by reducing the amount of fluid in the eye.

How do I take Azopt?

Azopt is an ophthalmic solution that is instilled in the eyes using an eyedropper, typically three times a day. Before using the medication for the first time, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or healthcare provider for instructions and assistance in applying the solution. Refer to the instructions enclosed with the packaging for specific directions. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands before and after instilling the drops. Do not allow the dropper to touch anything, including the skin, in order to prevent contamination. Azopt will not cure your condition; continue using it even if you feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Azopt?

If you forget to instill a scheduled dose of Azopt, administer it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, forego the one that was missed and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for the drops not taken.

What happens if I overdose on Azopt?

If Azopt is accidentally ingested, or too much is applied, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Azopt, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to brinzolamide, any of the ingredients in the Azopt ophthalmic solution, or any medications

  • You are allergic to sulfa drugs

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are using eye medications

  • You are using products containing aspirin

  • You are taking methazolamide, dichlorphenamide, or acetazolamide

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease

  • You wear soft contact lenses

What are the possible side effects of taking Azopt?

Some patients have reported side effects after using Azopt. Less severe side effects include a bitter, sour, or unusual taste after instilling the solution, blurred vision, dry eyes, headache, or runny nose. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, tongue, throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, rash, or itching), chest pain, fever, sore throat, or eye pain, swelling of the eyes, watery eyes.

How do I store Azopt?

Keep Azopt tightly sealed in its original container, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Do not allow the solution to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired Azopt in accordance with the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Azopt. This medication may cause blurred vision; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use firearms, or use power tools until its effects are known. If you wear soft contact lenses, wait at least fifteen minutes after using Azopt before reinserting them. Do not stop using this medication without a doctor’s permission.
