About Epzicom

What is Epzicom?

Epzicom contains two antiviral drugs: abacavir and lamivudine. These drugs work together to decrease the amount of human immunodeficiency virus in the body, allowing the immune system to function better and reducing the risk of developing HIV complications. It is important to keep in mind that while it can help control the virus, Epzicom is not a cure for HIV, and it will not prevent the virus from being spread to others.

How do I take Epzicom?

Take your prescribed dose of Epzicom once a day with or without food, unless your doctor has given you different dosage instructions. To keep the amount of the Epzicom drug in your body at a constant level, take the tablet at the same time every day. Refill your prescription before your supply of this medication runs out completely.

What if I forget to take a dose of Epzicom?

It is very important that you take Epzicom on a regular basis, as a decrease in the amount of medication in your body may cause the amount of virus to increase, putting you at greater risk for new and serious infections. If you do forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for you next dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosage schedule. If you have missed more than one dose, contact your doctor to find out what to do. Missing several doses may put you at a higher risk for having a severe allergic reaction to Epzicom.

What happens if I overdose on Epzicom?

Overdosing on Epzicom can be dangerous; if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Before taking Epzicom, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to abacavir or lamivudine, or you have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially the HIV medications Atripla, Combivir, Complera, Emtriva, Epivir, Triumeq, Trizivir, Truvada, Zerit, or Ziagen

  • You have a history of kidney or liver problems (especially hepatitis B)

  • You have a history of heart problems or are at high risk for developing heart disease

  • You have a history of heavy alcohol use

  • You have pancreatitis

  • You have the gene variation HLA-B*5701

  • You are pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Epzicom?

Epzicom may cause mild nausea, dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, or unusual dreams. Let your doctor know if any of these side effects last a long time or become bothersome. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, a fast heart rate, an enlarged thyroid, depression or anxiety, balance problems, cold sores, or any other side effects that concern you. The Epzicom drug may also cause new infections or liver problems; discuss warning signs of these conditions with your doctor before you start using this medication, and let your health care provider know right away if you have any related side effects.

How do I store Epzicom?

Keep Epzicom in a tightly sealed container at room temperature (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from light and humidity. Do not leave your medication anywhere that children or pets could access it.

Warnings

If you have hepatitis B, the Epzicom drug may cause additional liver problems. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this medication, and schedule regular tests of your liver function if you do use Epzicom. Even if you do not have hepatitis B, limit your alcohol consumption while taking this medication, as alcohol increases your risk for developing liver problems and pancreatitis, or exacerbating certain other side effects. Be careful driving and operating heavy machinery until you know how Epzicom affects you, since the medication causes dizziness and drowsiness in some people.
