About Donnatal

What is Donnatal?

Donnatal is a branded medication that contains phenobarbital, hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine. These last three medications are alkaloids that have antimuscarinic and anticholinergic properties that have an inhibitory effect on the parasympathetic nervous system. They help to treat irritable bowel syndrome and other intestinal disorders by slowing movement in the gastrointestinal tract and stopping spasms. Phenobarbital is a barbiturate medication that relaxes the body.

How do I take Donnatal?

Donnatal should be taken orally about once every 12 hours. It is normally taken about 30 minutes to an hour before meals. The dosage will vary by individual and condition. Some patients may require a dose every 8 hours. Always follow your doctors dosing instructions. If this medication causes you to have dry eyes, talk to your pharmacist about using artificial tears. Suck on hard candy or chew gum to relieve dry mouth. Eat a high-fiber diet to avoid constipation.

What if I forget to take a dose of Donnatal?

If you miss a dose of Donnatal, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, or if you have an empty stomach, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Donnatal to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Donnatal?

Signs of Donnatal drug overdose include nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, dilated pupils, hot and dry skin, dizziness, headache and central nervous system stimulation. If you think you or someone you know has overdoses on Donnatal, seek medical attention or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
