About Desowen

What is Desowen?

Desowen is a brand name version of desonide, a topical corticosteroid used to treat the inflammation, redness, itching, and general discomfort that accompany a number of skin conditions. It works by triggering the natural substances in the body that reduce itching, redness, and swelling.

How do I take Desowen?

Desowen is dispensed as a topical lotion, cream, or ointment that is applied to an affected area of the skin two or three times a day, depending on the strength of the prescription, the condition being treated, and the medical profile of the patient. To use, apply the recommended amount to the target area and gently massage it into the skin. Thoroughly wash your hands after use, unless it is a hand that is being treated. Do not cover the treatment site unless instructed to do so by a physician. Do not let the medication come in contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, mucus membranes, or vagina. Contact your doctor if your condition does not improve within 2 weeks.

What if I forget to take a dose of Desowen?

If you forget to apply Desowen at the prescribed time, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one and return to the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or alter the regimen to compensate for having missed a dose.

What happens if I overdose on Desowen?

The Desowen drug is for topical application only. If it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or is not breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Desowen, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to desonide or any of the ingredients in Desowen

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially immune system suppressants

  • You have Cushing’s syndrome

  • You have circulation problems

  • You have diabetes

  • You have HIV/AIDS, SCID, or any autoimmune disorder.

What are the possible side effects of taking Desowen?

Side effects have been reported by some who have used the Desowen drug, including stinging, burning, irritation, itching, peeling, dryness, or reddening at the application site. If any of these symptoms appear and linger or get worse, contact your doctor for assistance. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, or signs of a skin infection at the application site (swelling, redness, or oozing pus).

How do I store Desowen?

Keep Desowen tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from excesses of heat and humidity; bathroom storage is not recommended. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired quantities according to a pharmacist’s recommendations.

Warnings

Desowen is only for external application. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not use this medication for longer than 4 consecutive weeks.
