About Olux-E

What is Olux-E?

Olux-E (clobetasol propionate) is a corticosteroid applied as a topical emollient foam, which is intended to be used externally to treat moderate to severe skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis), and should never be used intravaginally, ophthalmically, or orally. As a potent steroid, it suppresses the chemicals which cause inflammation as well as certain other symptoms, including scaling, crusting, swelling, itching, and discomfort.

How do I take Olux-E?

Wash your hands and rinse with cool water before applying this medication. Shake thoroughly before use, and apply only as much Olux-E as required to cover the affected area with a thin layer of medication (often less than a cap-full). Turn the can upside-down and either spray directly onto the affected area or onto a cool surface. Be sure the surface is cooled and that the hand or fingers you use to apply the medication are cool; this prevents the medication from melting too early and ensures the right amount of medication is absorbed into your skin. Rub the medication in until it disappears.

Immediately discard excess foam that has been sprayed out and wash your hands. Do not bandage the affected area unless instructed to do so by your doctor. Do not apply this medication to certain areas of the body (e.g., the groin) unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Olux-E?

Apply a dose as soon as you remember it, unless it is almost time for your next dose. You should never apply double the amount of Olux-E to make up for the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Olux-E?

As a topical medication, overdose is not expected. If Olux-E has been ingested, call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance.

Before taking Olux-E, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any medical allergies, especially to any other corticosteroids.

  • You are using any other drugs, medicines, supplements, or vitamins, especially if they include other steroids.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.

  • You have diabetes.

  • You have difficulty being able to cool your fingers, etc., for applying this medication.

  • You have recently had or now have a skin infection of any kind.

  • You recently had or plan to get injected vaccinations.

  • You have certain other illnesses, including chicken pox, measles, and tuberculosis.

  • You have other skin disorders, such as rosacea or thinning skin.

  • You use other topical medications, cleansers, or skin products.

What are the possible side effects of taking Olux-E?

Some Olux-E side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention, including: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat), mood changes, feeling as though you may pass out, unusual tired feeling, fever, insomnia, vision problems including blurred vision or halos around lights, nausea and vomiting, unusual weight gain, unusual puffiness in the face, and severe irritation of the treated area.

Common side effects only need treatment if they persist or get worse. These include: mild irritation of the treated area including burning and itching, acne, dry skin, cracking skin, stretch marks, spider veins, crust or redness around hair follicles, and temporary hair loss.

How do I store Olux-E?

Do not freeze this medicine. Store at room temperature and away from excess moisture and heat. Olux-E is administered via aerosol can, and is therefore flammable. Be sure to keep the can away from open flames.

Warnings

Long term use of this medication can cause easy bruising, increased acne, changes in menstrual periods, changes in shape and location of fat on the body, loss of interest in sex or impotence, and thinning skin.

If you do need to take Olux-E long term, you may need regular tests, so keep all appointments with your doctor or lab. This medication should not be used long term in children, as it can have detrimental developmental effects.

Brand Names

A generic for Olux-E is available -- clobetasol emollient. A number of other brands utilizing clobetasol are on the market that are also topical, including Clobex and Temovate, but they are not emollient foams. However, in spite of that, the cost of Olux-E remains expensive. You can discount that cost by as much as 75% if you take advantage of our free Olux-E coupon. Just click Claim Discount to print or download your coupon, or you can request a discount card in the side margin. Present either to your pharmacist when you drop off your prescription, and the discounted prices for Olux-E will be reflected at checkout.
