About Luxiq

What is Luxiq?

Luxiq (betamethasone foam) is a medium-strength corticosteroid. It may be prescribed to treat skin conditions that affect the scalp, such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. It helps decrease scalp redness, itching, and inflammation.

How do I use Luxiq?

Before using this medication, spray a small amount of the Luxiq foam onto a cool, clean surface (such as a plate or tray). Use your fingers to scoop up a little bit of foam and massage it into the affected areas of the scalp until absorbed. Use only enough foam to completely cover the affected areas, and clean any leftover foam off the surface on which you sprayed it. Do not cover or bandage your head unless instructed to do so by your doctor. Wash your hands thoroughly when you are done with each application.

What if I forget to take a dose of Luxiq?

It is best to apply Luxiq at the same time every day to help you remember. If you do forget, apply the foam as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not use more of the Luxiq foam than you normally would for one dose.

What happens if I overdose on Luxiq?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on Luxiq when applying it topically, but the medication can be dangerous when swallowed. If you or anyone in your household has swallowed some of this foam, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Before taking Luxiq, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to Luxiq or any other corticosteroids

  • You have any other allergies to foods or medicines

  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications

  • You have blood circulation problems

  • You have a compromised immune system

  • You have a skin infection

  • You have tuberculosis, shingles, measles, or chicken pox

  • You have thinning of the skin

  • You have recently been vaccinated

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Luxiq?

Skin irritation is the most commonly reported side effect of Luxiq. This will most likely go away after a short time, but if you experience persistent itching, burning, dryness, or stinging, tell your doctor. Contact your health care provider right away in the unlikely event that this medication causes skin thinning or discoloration, stretch marks, acne, inflammation of the hair follicles, unwanted hair growth, extreme fatigue, weight loss or gain, increased thirst or urination, swollen feet, or vision problems.

How do I store Luxiq?

Luxiq is flammable, so make sure it is stored far away from fire or open flame (such as a gas stove). Avoid puncturing or burning the canister. Keep this medication at room temperature, out of reach of pets and children. If you no longer need the medication or it has expired, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.

Warnings

Because Luxiq is flammable, you should avoid smoking immediately after applying the foam to your scalp or any time you are near the canister. Corticosteroids like Luxiq may change the way your body responds to physical stress, so be sure to tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication if you will be undergoing surgery or getting any vaccinations.
