How do I take azathioprine?

Azathioprine comes as a pill to be taken orally with a glass of water. The size and frequency of your dosage will depend on your condition. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. To treat rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor will usually start you on a small dose of 1mg of azathioprine and slowly increase it over time. It may take up to 12 weeks to notice a change. What if I forget to take a dose of azathioprine?

• You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners, preventative vaccinations, allopurinol, drugs that are classified as aminosalicylates, ACE inhibitors, other immunosuppressant drugs, and antibiotics.

• You have a bone marrow disease or TPMT deficiency.

What are the possible side effects of taking azathioprine?

Side effects from taking azathioprine include mild nausea, diarrhea, hair loss and vomiting. If you experience signs of infection, have severe vomiting or diarrhea, dark urine, clay-colored stools, white sores in or around your mouth, fever, rapid heart rate, pain in your upper abdomen, or you experience weight loss, easy bruising or bleeding, or a burning sensation when you urinate, contact your doctor at once.
