What is Zemplar?

Zemplar is the drug paricalcitol, a manufactured form of Vitamin D. It is an anti-thyroid agent, prescribed to prevent hyperparathyroidism (an overactive parathyroid gland) in those suffering from chronic kidney failure. It works by lowering the amount of PTH (parathyroid hormone) in the blood to help the body maintain proper concentrations of calcium and phosphorus.

How do I take Zemplar?

Zemplar is administered in capsule form and taken orally with or without food. The dosage strength and dosing schedule will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s medical profile; follow the prescribed dosing regimen that accompanies the prescription exactly. Do not crush, chew, or split the capsule. Taking too much Zemplar or taking it for too long a time can have serious side effects. Your doctor may recommend changes to your diet while you ae taking this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zemplar?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Zemplar, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Zemplar?

If an overdose of Zemplar is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include feeling unusually hot, a metallic taste in the mouth, constipation, dry mouth fainting, severe pain in upper stomach area, itchy skin, vomiting, diminished sex drive, weakness, unusual thoughts or behavior, disorientation, arrhythmia, tachycardia, bradycardia, weight loss, nausea, headache, drowsiness, weakness, or pain in the bones and muscles.

Before taking Zemplar, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to paricalcitol, Vitamin D, or any of the ingredients in the Zemplar drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking heparin, supplements containing aluminum, calcium, or potassium, diuretics, verapamil, cimetidine, diltiazem, digoxin, calcipotriene, or atorvastatin;

  • You have, or have had, hypercalcemia, high levels of Vitamin D, hypertension, or an electrolyte imbalance

  • You have, or have had, kidney disease, liver disease, sarcoidosis, atherosclerosis, histoplasmosis, hyperparathyroidism, tuberculosis, or lymphoma.

What are the possible side effects of taking Zemplar?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Zemplar. Less severe symptoms include diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, hypertension, and anxiety. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), painful urination, fever, chills, and other flu-like symptoms, increase thirst, loss of appetite, constipation, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, and restlessness.

How do I store Zemplar?

Keep Zemplar tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
