It works by helping the body maintain proper levels of calcium and phosphorous.

How do I take Hectorol?

Hectorol is administered in capsule form and taken orally with water and without regard for food. For those undergoing dialysis, it is taken three times a week. If it is prescribed as a dietary supplement, follow the instructions of your healthcare provider.

What if I forget to take a dose of Hectorol?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Hectorol, contact your doctor for instructions. Do not take extra capsules or change the dosing scheduled to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Hectorol?

If an overdose of Hectorol is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include headache, arrhythmia; muscle, bone, or abdominal pain; constipation, nausea, or vomiting; dry mouth, or metallic taste in the mouth; diminished appetite; tiredness or weakness.

Before taking Hectorol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to doxercalciferol, other forms of Vitamin D, or any of the ingredients in the Hectorol drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking, or have recently stopped taking other forms of Vitamin D, ergocalciferol, or calcium supplements

  • You are taking antacids, cholestyramine, digoxin, colestipol, ketoconazole, phenobarbital, phenytoin, lanthanum, or sevelamer

  • You are taking diuretics, laxatives, oral steroids, or mineral oil

  • You have high levels of calcium, vitamin D, or phosphorous

  • You have, or have had liver or kidney disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Hectorol?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Hectorol. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following: signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); arrhythmia, increased frequency of urination at night; nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, weakness, headache, bone or muscle pain, increased thirst, shortness of breath, dizziness, or dry mouth.

How do I store Hectorol?

Keep Hectorol tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused capsules according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
