About Vaniqa

What is Vaniqa?

Vaniqa is the brand name for eflornithine, a medication that was discovered in the late 1970s while researchers were trying to develop a cancer treatment. While this medication had no effect on cancer cells, it was discovered to be effective in inhibiting the growth of facial hair as a topical medication and in treating human African trypanosomiasis, or African sleeping sickness, as an injection. The brand name Vaniqa is a topical form of this medication that is sold to treat hirsutism, or excessive hair growth in women. It works by in inhibiting the ODC enzyme in hair follicle cells which plays a part in cell division and hair growth. By blocking this enzyme, Vaniqa significantly retards to the growth rate of hair at the site of application. If the use of this medication is discontinued, hair growth rate will often return to normal after a few weeks. Because Vaniqa is not a permanent solution to hair growth, it is often used along with other procedures such as laser hair removal to stop hair growth.

How do I take Vaniqa?

To get the best price, use Vaniqa coupons from FamilyWize or Vaniqa rebates to purchase your medication. To apply Vaniqa cream, wash and dry the affected area. Then apply a thin layer of cream to cover the area and rub it in so that it is absorbed. This medication is usually applied twice a day. Wait at least 8 hours between applications. Vaniqa may be used along with your regular hair removal procedures. This could be laser therapy, waxing, or another cream. Talk to your doctor about mixing medications or treatments. You may apply cosmetics or sunscreen after Vaniqa has dried (5-10 minutes). If you need to wash your face, wait at least 4 hours to allow the medication to soak in. You should start to notice a change in hair growth after 4-8 weeks of beginning treatment. Do not get it into your eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. If this occurs, rinse the area thoroughly until all medication has been removed.

What if I forget to take a dose of Vaniqa?

If you miss an application of Vaniqa, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue on your regular schedule. Do not use this medication unless 8 hours have passed since your last application.
