About Unithroid

What is Unithroid?

Unithroid is a drug that contains levothyroxine sodium, called T4, which is indistinguishable from that which the body normally produces naturally via the thyroid gland. For various reasons, some patients may be unable to produce thyroid hormones at a normal rate or at all. In these cases, Unithroid can provide a supplement to arrested thyroid hormone production. It can also be used to treat or prevent goiters, or enlarged thyroid glands, caused by cancer, radiation therapy, or thyroid gland problems.

How do I take Unithroid?

Unithroid should be taken according to what is printed on the prescription label. Your doctor will provide directions on dosage, and if any changes need to be made, will direct you according to the new changes. Do not change the dosage by yourself. Tablets should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 30 minutes before breakfast. Take medicine at the same time each day with a full 8 oz glass of water.

What if I forget to take a dose of Unithroid?

If you forget to take a dose of Unithroid, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is already nearly time for your next dose, do not take an extra dose to make up for the one you missed.

What happens if I overdose on Unithroid?

Taking too much Unithroid could cause serious consequences. If you notice severe side effects, including headache, leg cramps, tremors, feeling nervous or irritable, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fast or pounding heartbeats, contact a healthcare professional immediately or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to seek help.

Before taking Unithroid, tell your doctor if:

  • You have thyrotoxicosis

  • You have heart disease, coronary artery disease, or a history of blood clots

  • You have diabetes

  • You have anemia

  • You have osteoporosis

  • You have pituitary gland problems

  • You have food or drug allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

  • You have an untreated adrenal gland disorder

  • A history of heart attack

What are the possible side effects of taking Unithroid?

Contact a healthcare professional immediately if you experience any of these side effects: fast or irregular heart rate, fever, hot flashes, sweating, insomnia, menstrual changes, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite changes, or weight changes. These may be signs of an adverse reaction with the medication. Some patients may experience mild hair loss when taking Unithroid.

How do I store Unithroid?

Unithroid should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 30 degrees Celsius). Store it away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Unithroid cream out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Unithroid should not be used to treat any conditions other than the ones indicated by the manufacturers of the drug or your doctor. Do not take the drug Unithroid to help with weight loss or weight control. It can have serious side effects if misused, and may interact negatively with other weight control medications and stimulant drugs.
