About Cytomel

What is Cytomel?

Cytomel is the brand name for the liothyronine, a manufactured form of a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It is prescribed to treat hypothyroidism and its symptoms, including poor growth, a lack of energy, hair loss, slow speech, chills, weight gain, and dry skin. It is also prescribed to treat goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and to test for hyperthyroidism.

How do I take Cytomel?

Cytomel is administered as a tablet that is taken orally, usually once a day with an approved liquid. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Cytomel does not cure the conditions for which it is prescribed. Follow the prescription exactly as written and continue to take the Cytomel drug even if you feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of Cytomel?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Cytomel, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular dosing regimen. Do not increase the number of pills taken or change the dosing schedule to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Cytomel?

If an overdose of the Cytomel drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Cytomel, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to liothyronine or any of the ingredients in the Cytomel tablet

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking cancer medications, beta-blockers, arthritis medication, anticoagulants, diabetes medications, oral contraceptives, estrogen, anti-anxiety medication, anti-depressants, cholesterol-lowering resins, amphetamines, steroids, or antacids

  • You are taking sucralfate, aspirin, iron, digoxin, cholestyramine, methadone, digoxin, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, phenytoin, colestipol, or theophylline

  • You have, or have had, a heart attack, hypertension, any cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, chest pain, diabetes, hepatitis, underactive adrenal gland, kidney disease, or an underactive pituitary gland

What are the possible side effects of taking Cytomel?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Cytomel. Less severe symptoms include changes in the menstrual cycle, diarrhea, excessive sweating, fever, headache, increased appetite, insomnia, irritability, nervousness, heat sensitivity, stomach cramps, temporary hair loss, bodily tremors, upset stomach, vomiting, or weight loss. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your physician.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest pains, tachycardia, or arrhythmia.

How do I store Cytomel?

Keep Cytomel tightly sealed in its container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired pills according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Cytomel. This is a lifelong medication. Do not use Cytomel to treat obesity if your thyroid is functioning normally.
