About Ultram

What is Ultram?

Ultram is prescription analgesic of the opioid class and is the brand name of the generic medication tramadol HCl (hydrochloride). The primary Ultram uses include controlling pain; however, it may also be prescribed for the treatment of RLS or other conditions.

How do I take Ultram?

The Ultram drug is prescribed in tablet form and is usually taken every four to six hours, depending on your doctor’s recommendation. It may be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole, with water or other appropriate liquid. Do not stop taking your Ultram pills without your physician’s approval, even if your conditions improve.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ultram?

If you are taking regularly scheduled doses of the Ultram pain killer and you miss one, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next regularly scheduled dose, forego the missed one and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Ultram?

If you, or the patient, have overdosed on Ultram pain medication, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for instructions. If the individual has collapsed, stopped breathing, or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose of Ultram medication include difficulty breathing, constricted pupils, extreme drowsiness or loss of consciousness, feelings of weakness, and a slowed heart rate.

Before taking Ultram, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to tramadol

  • You are allergic to opiates of any kind

  • You are taking anticoagulants

  • You are taking antifungal medications

  • You are being treated for migraine headaches

  • You are taking MAO inhibitors

  • You are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

  • You are taking tranquilizers

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing

  • You have, or have had, kidney disease

  • You have, or have had, heart problems or disease

  • You have lung disease or other respiratory problems that affect your ability to breathe

  • You have, or have had, liver disease

  • You have had a head injury or seizures

  • You have had brain or spinal infections or a brain tumor

  • You have any conditions that increase the pressure in the brain

  • You suffer from depression or you have had suicidal thoughts

What are the possible side effects of taking Ultram?

Those using this medication have reported several Ultram side effects. Less severe side effects include weakness or dizziness, nervousness or agitation, body tremors, extreme tiredness, sweating, indigestion, constipation or diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, headache, insomnia, mood changes, or dry mouth, among others. If you experience any of these and they persist or worsen, contact your physician.

Severe Ultram side effects include arrhythmia, seizures, loss of coordination, loss of consciousness, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat or difficulty swallowing), visual and aural hallucinations, or difficulty breathing. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

How do I store Ultram?

Keep Ultram tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of unused or outdated tablets in accordance with the instructions of your pharmacist.

Ultram may cause dizziness or fainting when arising quickly from a prone position. This medication may cause drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools until its effects are known. Alcohol can exacerbate the effects of Ultram medications. Because Ultram is an opioid drug, long-term or unsupervised use can lead to dependence or addiction. If you become pregnant while taking your Ultram pain medication, contact your physician immediately.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
