About Synjardy

What is Synjardy?

Synjardy contains two diabetes medicines: metformin and empagliflozin. These active ingredients work together to help the kidneys get rid of excess glucose and to lower glucose production in the liver, which helps to prevent high blood sugar. It may be prescribed to patients who are currently taking metformin and empagliflozin separately, or to patients who have not been able to successfully control their blood sugar levels with metformin or empagliflozin alone.

How do I take Synjardy?

Take Synjardy with food as directed by your doctor. You will need to monitor your blood sugar regularly while taking this medication. Make sure to eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise to maximize the benefits of Synjardy.

What if I forget to take a dose of Synjardy?

Take the missed dose with food as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not take extra tablets to make up for the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Synjardy?

Overdosing on medications containing metformin may cause unusual drowsiness, muscle pain or weakness, shortness of breath, slow heart rate, stomach pain, severe dizziness, and fainting. If you or someone in your home is exhibiting signs of a Synjardy overdose, get emergency medical attention right away.

Before taking Synjardy, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to metformin or empagliflozin, or you have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

  • You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis

  • You are on a low sodium diet

  • You have low blood pressure

  • You have high cholesterol

  • You have kidney or liver disease

  • You have a history of urinary tract or bladder problems

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of taking Synjardy?

Common side effects of Synjardy may include headache, cold-like symptoms, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or get worse, inform your doctor. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: severe lightheadedness, dehydration, painful or infrequent urination, unusual tiredness or shortness of breath, swollen hands or feet, or penis or vaginal discharge.

How do I store Synjardy?

Store Synjardy at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of children. If you have unused or expired tablets that you need to dispose of, contact your pharmacist to find out how to do so safely.

Warnings

Limit your alcohol consumption while taking Synjardy; alcohol can lower your blood sugar and increase your likelihood of experiencing adverse effects. Your likelihood of experiencing low blood sugar increases when you take Synjardy with other diabetes medications. Make sure you’re familiar with the signs of low blood sugar and always have a quick source of sugar available.

Brand Names

Synjardy is only available as a brand name drug. There are no alternative brand names that contain the combination of empagliflozin and metformin. If this is the best treatment option for you and you are looking for a way to save, remember to print or download a Synjardy coupon or request our prescription savings card.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
